jubilanBrItisha crowds and the
House of ,gefinritms cheered Nev7
ille Chamberlain on his return
from Munich.
Later on, the hlndsighters, had
their chance, and Chamberlain
was smeared as few earnest
statesmen have been smeared,
But he remained in high honor
among those who were close, even
though opposed, to him, In those
crisis hours of 1940, Winston
Churchill rose in the House of
Commons and said, in part:
"It fell to Neville Chamberlain
in one of the supreme crises of
the world to be contradicted by
events, to be disappointed in his
hopes, and to be deceived and
cheated by a wicked man. But
what were these hopes in which
he was disappointed? . . . They
were surely among the most
noble and benevolent instincts of
the human heart — the love of
peace, the toil for peace, the strife
for peace . . . even at great peril
and certainly to the utter disdain
of popularity or clamor
from NEWSWEEK.
Even The Experts
Can Be Wrong
Moments before the start of
the 88th Kentucky Derby Eddie
Arcaro, master jockey emeritus,
offered a prediction: "The track
superintendent told me the
track's ,as fast today as it was
when I set the Derby record in
1941 on Whirlaway, but there
won't be a new record today.
These horses ahe not of Whirl-
away's caliber."
Arcaro, winner of a record
five Derbies, was decidedly
wrong; he had overlooked De-
cidedly, a dark-gray 8-1' shot
f'Ll.m California that had never
won a major race. With jockey
Bill Hartack riding a precisely
planned race, rating him until
the clubhouse turn, Decidedly
flashed by heavily favored Ridan
and three 'other horses in the
stretch and won by 21/4 lengths.
The time for the mile and a
quarter: 2:00.4a a full second ,fast-
er than Whirlaway's ,record.
Hartack, 29, the unpopular and.,
unsentimental angry young man
of horse racing, "was more pre-
dictable than his mount; Ha
glared at a writer who called:
him Willie ("My name's BillI")
and criticized jockey, Manuel
Yeeza, who finished third on
Ridan ("He, had trouble getting
him under control").. "I keep
saying the Derby's just another
race, that all' other races'. are
equally important," said the 5-
foot -2, 109 - pounder,' sneezing
from the winner's garland of
roses, "But this Derby did stir
Me up. a, little more."
For .Hartack, who had ridden
Ridan' during an undefeated sea-
son as a two-year-old in 1961
and then lost him to Yeaza• in
1962,, his third Derby victory
was by far.. the sweetest "We
had it," he said, grinning. "We
showed them, didn't. We?" Har-
tack and Decidedly, winner of
$119,650,,, will get a chance to
'show them again in the Preak-
iiesS, the second event' in racing's
Triple Crown.
"What's the surest method of
falling asleep?" asks a reader.
Turning off the alarm.

Greatest Golfer
And His Caddy
Mid way through the playoff
Jo r the Masters championship,
Arnold Palmer, the untroubled
Icing 0 professional golf, found
himself in king-size trouble
three strokes behind defending
VhamPton gar), Player of Setith
Africa, "We wasn't worried,"
said Nathaniel (Ironman) Avert,
who was caddying for Palmer,
"When Mister pAhner jerked at
his glove, hitched up his pants,
and started walking real fast te
that eleventh tee, I knew we
was going to be all right. When
be does that, Mister Palmer is
ready to stampede anything in
his way,"
Avery, who has caddied for
Mister Palmer in the last eight
Masters, knew his golfer well,
With brilliant birdies on five of
the fipal nine holes, Palmer
stampeded Player and his other
playoff opponent, Dow Finatea-
ivald, 'Shooting a spectacular
.470-66-69-75-68 over the challeng-
ing Augusta National course,
Palmer, 32, became the thir d.
man ever to win three Masters
champion.ships (the others: Ben
Hogan, Sam Snead and Jimmy
Demaret) and golf's all-time top
official money winnce• (with
$298,738,09). "I cut it a little too
fine this year," said Palmer.
"But it, didn't bother Old Iron-
man,"
At 23, Old Ironman, a skinny,
beer-drinking 6-footer, lives in
,New York and goes back to his
native Georgia only to caddy in
the Masters. He finds the trip
profitable, In eight years,
Palmer has won $67,713 at the
Masters; he has given Avery
nearly $5,500. Ironman's share
of Palmer's 1962 winnings of
$20,000: $1,500.
What does A V e r,y or an y
other caddy do to earn so much
money in one week? "It's not
just carrying that heavy b a g
and staying out of the golfer's
way," says Gene Stout, head pro
at the Augusta National. "Our
caddies know this course like a
book — they can read the
greens `and they know how it'll
play in all kinds of wind and
weather. A real good caddy can
add 40 per cent to a player's
game. A few guys never listen
to their caddies, but the good
ones know better."
Palmer is a good one. He
knows that at the Masters a
caddy can be a pro's best friend.
"What do you think, Ironman?"
Palmer asks, after Studying
each shot. "Looks like a six. to
me," answers Ironman, nick-
named because of his ability, to
carry the 45-pound golf bag.
When they disagree, which isn't
often, Palmer usually stays with
his choice, occasionally gees
with Avery's. '"We talk clubs,"
says' Palmer, "but the decision
, is mine." Playing the tenth hole
during the fourth round of the
Masters, Palmer went 'with
Avery's club—a two iron—and
took „a double' boge y, "Well,
Ironman," said Palmer, "we just
lost -this . tournament."
"We ain't lost nothing," ,snap-
ped Avery, "We got eight more
holes:10 play, Mister Palmer, so
'let's get going."
When he isn't cheering him or,
guiding him, Avery makes sure
Palmer has enough cigarettes
(at least' a pack a round) and
soda (a cup .a round). "I never
say anything to him unless he
asks," says Avery, a high-70's
golfer who hopes to be a pro.
"But he asks me every hole and
I got to be right."
At the Masters, the caddy
picks the player and stays with,
him each year unless the player
requests a switch, Eight year,
ago, Avery, who started caddy-
ing when he was 19, chose
Palmer, "On his good .days,
Ironman's a big help," said
Palmer, smiling, "But he has
his bad ones, Sometimes I feel
like hitting him over the head
with my* clubs."

An editorial on this page a
short time Ago voiced the dis-

With Little Water
It is noW seven in the evening
sod Mariano has just returned
tram the wheat field with his
$00s, Would I like to aceornpany
him up the mountainside, he
asks, for there are some plants
there that need tending. In A
corner of his house he fincia hia
hoe, and we Walk out into the
village street, The torrid heat
of day has given way to a cozy
warmth that is accentuated by
the reddish, setting sun,
Almost at once We are walk-
ing uphill; soon, the gray, gran-
ite homes of La Colilla are be-
hind us, The path up the moun-
tainside is narrow and twisting,
at first running along small
fields separated by stone fences,
Then there is nothing but boul-
ders, scraggly weeds, and brush.
Through the thick soles of my
shoes I can feel every pebble,
and I sometimes slip on the loose
stones, But Mariano, almost 60
years old, walks with strong,
sure-footed steps. As we climb
higher I can see most of the vil-
lage beide, tia, the corrugated
roofs sharply etched by the low
sun, .
We are quite high now, and
ray eye travels for miles over the
level Castilian plain where only
the dim, torn edge of the Grader-
ros Mountains breaks the hori-
zon. We have been climbing
ateadily for almost half an hour,
yet all I can see up ahead is a
rocky mountain too desolate to
grow anything. Where is Ma-
riano going, I wonder.
Finally we arrive at a small
reservoir where the drippings of
a mountain spring have been
captured by a dam of rocks and
earth, "Little water," he tells
me. "There has been almost no
rain this year. In the past it was
much better. We grew many
string beans then." Dipping his
hand deep in the water, he
SCOOPS out the ,plug of mud and
stone, allowing the trapped wa-
ter to gurgle into a carved
trough. In a series of four tiny
waterfalls it tumbles downhill
among the boulders.
We follow it and I discover at
last the point of the walk, for
there, scratched lovingly from
the almost useless ground, is a
tiny vegetable garden with sad
little plants sagging in neat rows.
The old man works quickly
with his hoe, clearing twigs and
dirt from the furrows so that
the water can move freely and
perhaps bring some life to the
plants. Soon the flow stops . . .
there is just enough to allow a
little moisture to reach the last
plant, but not as much as is
needed,
"There was little water this
year," he mumbles half aloud.
'Very small potatoes and few
beans. It is a difficult thing."
He dams the mountain spring
again, and we walk down to the
town. It as darker now, and far
4n the distance the lights of Avila
twinkle like a cluater of fire-
flies, Closer, at the base of the
hill, the street lights of La Colil-
la flick on. I can hear nothing
but the occasional bray of a
burro, It is. a scene of delicious

In Defense Of A
Much-Slandered Man
Munich is one of history's dirt-
iest words, and in the public mind
a large part of the soilure has
rubbed off en the reputation of
the late Neville Chamberlain. He
is the trembling old boy with the
umbrella, the queasy prince of
appeasement, But now a power-
ful defense of Chamberlain is ,
entered by no less a figure than
lain Macleod, 48, Conservative
Party leader of the House of
Commons, former Minister of
Health and of Labor, former Col-
onial Secretary, and widely re-
garded as heir apparent to Prime
Minister Harold Macmillan. The
book, "Neville Chamberlain" by
lain Macleod is bound to stir up
ancient controversies once more.
Macleod is not defending- the
Munich pact, nor talking politics;
he is arguing, with great force,
that Neville Chamberlain's part
was the action not of a weakling
but of a brave, honorable, deter-
mined man who hated war and
Hitler, who passionately desired
peace and genuinely felt that he
was acting for the peace of Eu-
rope. And Macleod has great
students of the situation on his
side. Most eloquently, he has
Winston Churchill, whose vale-
dictory in the House of Commons
for Chamberlain, after his death
by cancer in 1940, is one of the
most moving of all the Churchil-
Ilan utterances.
The .major part of the book ex-
hibits ,Chamberlain's character
through an account of his career.
He was the son of the famous
Birmingham industrialist a n d
Liberal statesman Joseph Cham-
berlain. Neville's mother died
when he was a child, but he grew'
up in a warm relationship with
his older half-brother Austen, his
sisters, and a family teeming with
cousins, All his life he found his
chief pleasures in family affec-
tion, music, and, in later days,
fishing. A tremendous worker,
' he became a. great ciyic figure
and public-minded Lord Mayor of
Birmingham, devoted to its uni-
versity, hospitals, orchestra, say-
ings banks, industrial relations,
labor conditions,, town planning.
He did 'not marry until he was
42, and 'his union with the much
younger Anne Cole was idyllic.
Chamberlain Went on to great-
ly, admired national services as
Minister of Health and"Chancel-
115r of 'the Exchequer; he was a
famously industrious and reliable
servent•of the state, As early as
1934, in a nation swept with pa-
cificst sentiments
'
he was ex-
pressing his hatred of Nazism and
eagerness for British rearma-
nent.r In 1936 he declared: 'I am.
horrified by the German behavior
to the Jews." In, 1937 ,he rose to
the Prime Ministership, And Win-
ston ChUrchill saluted his prev-
ious efforts for rearmament. „
At length.' there was 'Munich
(the full .pact is quoted ip the
book). ' Madleod observes that
"ChambearlairP "roust certainly
bear the chief responsibility for
the policy of appeasement," But
there was not mueh talk about
appeasement until the world, as
bll as'isieville Chamberlain, had
been made to realize the black
