Auetrelia's cuddlesome real-
life "Teddy Bears" — the koelas
love to he petted, 13irt the
yeeerninent is strictly enforcing
its law prohibiting their being
kept pets — for the bears'
own protection.
lteeently 1101.111011 Schmidt, a
diesel fitter of Onkleigh, Mel-
boUrne, found. ll koala lying on
its beck, groaning, in a country
lane.
110 thought it was ill, took it
home and built a cage for it in
his back garden, He made the
cage three feet square and forty
feet high to give the bear ample
climbing space,
Wet eoon neighbours talked
and the police arrived, Schmidt
was taken to court and fined
$50 for contravening the bear
protection laws, His pet was re-
etored to the forest.
Had not Australia introduced.
a special section to her Game
Act, prohibiting the keeping of
koalas as pets, the little bear
would possibly have been hunted
out of existence and. exploited.,
in captivity, by pet dealers.
Australia is determined that
so attractive and remarkable a
creature shall never become ex-
tinct. And, in fact, in eastern
regions, the koala bear is ill--
creasing in numbers.
Naturalists describe the koala
as a marsupial, one of that pri-
mitive f a m ily of mammals
whose young, when born, are
imperfectly formed. Such
mothers rear their offspring in
a pouch.
Koalas like to lie up by day,
curled in the fork of gum trees,
At night they feed on the gum
leaves. Though Australia has be-
t w e e n 400 a rf d 500 different
varieties of gum and eucalyptus
tree, the koala can survive on:
no more than four or five of
these varieties,
He doesn't drink, but gets his
moisture from leaf sap and dew.
His name, koala, is an aboriginal
word meaning "no drink."
Young cubs or "Joeys" are a
delight to watch. On emerging
from their mother's pouch, they
cling to her back, and travel
with her, pick-a-back, until big
enough to look after themselves.

Talking of police rases, the
boundless cunning of the French
police in their war against nude
sunbathers leaves one breath-
less. Now seven highly-respect-
ed storekeepers — three women
and four men — of Ilyeres on
the Riviera — have complained
about police duplicity. They
made their outburst when they
were each fined for outraging
public decency by sunbathing in
the nude on a local beach. The
prosecution's ease was that the
group had committed the offence
on many previous occasions, but
whenever a police official ap-
proached them, they would dash
Into the sea,
The pOlice, therefore, decided
to change their tacticS. Several
detectives, disguised as tramps,
followed a uniformed officer
along the beach.
When the' nudists saw the po-
liceman and dashed into the sea,
the "down and outs" approached
the bathers' heap of clothing,
and pretended to rifle the gar-
ments.
The naturists dashed from the
water — yelling for the police.
And the gendarmes, no doubt,
were proud of their day's, work.

"World's Best
BlOody Soldiers"
Just before the fall of Tobruk
in 1942, an Australian soldier
who thought he was out alone
on, a night patrol suddenly
froze in his tracks. In the almost
total darkness, a hand had brush-
ed his face, Then the fingers
moved on to trace out the metal
letters on his shoulder insignia.
After that, the stranger whis-
pered, "Nice Aussie, nice Aussie,"
and vanished into the night.
For weeks after that the Aus-
tralian shuddered every time he
thought about how close he had
come to .having his throat cut.
For he knew that his nocturnal
visitor had been a Gurkha, out
hunting Germans with his kukri
— a heavy, 12- to 15-inch curved
knife that is the Gurkhas' favor-
ite weapon and the symbol of
their legendary skill as fighting
men.
Stubborn, sturdy Himalayan
tribesmen, the Gurkhas have
been recruited into the British
Army as mercenaries ever since

According to Tate, different
kinds of movements create dif-
ferent sounds that can be distin-
guished by an operator after
only one: week's training, For
example, the motion of a man's
legs produces the distinctive
whumping sound, and a tracked
vehicle like a tank produces two

from the turning treads. The
strength of the signal, displayed

mobility, a combat soldier may
even carry stIong a standard ra-

target by the familiar method of
watching it move across the

Tate and his six-man team

World War I; their war cry, "Ayo
„Gurkhali" ("The Gurkhas have
comet"), threw terror into the
heart of the Germans. In World
War II, they supplied more than
40 battaliene which served in
Europe, Africa, Iran, Burma, and
Malaya, suffered .24;000 casual-
ties, and . won ten Victoria
Crosses. Today; the. Gurkhas are
the mainstay of the British
Army's forces east of Aden. There
are two battalions of them - in
Singapore, four in Malaya, and
two battalions in Hong Kong.
The Gurkhas are also considered
the best fighting-men' in the In-
dian Army, which includes six
Gurkha 'regiments and at least
one Gurkha bagpipe band. The
Indian Army is now represented
in the Congo by the - toughest
single outfit in the United Nee
tions forces — the first battal-
ion, third Gurkha regiment,
Last month, army commanders
in both Indian and Britain were
quietly worrying about the fu=
ture of their Gurkha soldiers.
There were dismaying reports
from Nepal, the tiny Himalayan .
kingdom where the Gurkhas
make their home. 'King Mahen-
dra, who dissolved his elected
Parliament fourteen months ago,
is currently • threatened by in-
creasing guerrilla action, sup-

China, both Britain • and Ladle
may .be unable to recruit the
1,000 or more Gurkhas a year
who comprise Nepal's major -ex-
port (and its- main Source of for-
eign exchange),
The mere thought that Gurkha
recruitment might. be cut • _off
was enough to make the British
Army — perennially hard pri's'-
ed for recruits — become alarm-
ed. There were suggestions that
this was what lay behind last
week's announcement that the
03rd - Gurkha Brigtele would
shortly, be redeployed. Atter

The ProePect of having a per=

the legends of these Gurkha corn-
