Murder Clue Just Sit On A Rock And Keep Quiet i During childhood summer va,- rations — sometimes spent at Aunt ,Flossie's summer house in Milton, New Hampshire, some- times at the family farm on the Fiseatuga River at fllet, Maine —I got to. know Pad well, We'd go for long walks through the woods and he'd spin romantic stories about the Indians who used to live among those rocks and trees, But mostly we'd talk about the animals of the region, Dad called them the true na- tives. In order that I could see them in their own world he persuaded eie to go between dark and dawn to the shores of a nearby lake. He explained that any unexpected action might startle an animal S4 badly that it would be afraid of people forever, I was deeply impressed, "Sit on a big rock, baby," he told me, "and don't say a word. Even if they come close and look right at you, Don't even blink an eye." Looking back now, I'm quite sure I was well supervised by my father from a nearby hillock, but I wasn't aware of this. I believed I was alone in the big outdoors—a thrill I've never for- gotten. A marvelous thing happened on those, early-morning watches. I developed a nodding acquaint- ance with a moose! He used to come about once a week to drink at the water's edge. He was a big fellow' with a magnifi- cent sweep of broad antlers. One day I brought along crusts of bread and left them by his watering place. With each succeeding visit of my moose, I moved the bread nearer to my observation post. Soon I had him eating. so close to me that I could hear his huge teeth grinding. The big animal couldn't have been more than a couple of yards away, One morning I took a deep breath and managed' a soft "Hello--" But the sound of my voice, startled. him and sent him crashing ,through the brush.' My moose never came back. He had been frightenecr"beyOnd , his un- derstanding, and'I had learned my first •Inaportent animal. les- son.—From "Kangaroos in the Kitchen," by ,Lorrein D'Essen. .L•ft.Over Stories Of Hockey Season It's en unfortunate circurn- stance that so many professional ' athletes today are demanding anYd getting. money.for4luest _ap- .pearane;e,a, ,,whichArg•the„lorig Tun . amounts to "paid' advertising in reverse.",,, Few do anything for ,inething end even deserVing boys' clubs which count heavily on personal contract' with the :professional esters, are 4 finding- it more End more 'difficult: to Com- pete i,vaith the lure of the al- inikhty &Baia. The arm had been severed at the shoulder, A Pieee of rope was bound tightly round the wrist. The police made inquiries about missing men with tattoo marks on their arms, and ever:- tually the wife and brother of one, a billiard-marker named James Smith, identified the limb as his, He had left home on April 8th that year, 1935, nine days before the shark was captured, saying he was going fishing with an- other man, The rope round the wrist made it unlikely that the arm had been bitten off, so the beaches and sea-bed in the local- ity were searched for• other parts of the body—without result, The dissected body of the shark yielded' nothing. At first the police thought Smith had committed suicide by tying a rope round his arms andeaa body, weighting it With softie-, heavy object, and leaping iritaie. the sea. Suspecting foul play,a they interviewed associates of the dead man, but found no one who'd been fishing with him or even seen him set out for the day. The probability was that Smith had never gone fishing at all, but had gone to a certain seaside cottage with ' anothtr man, for it was reported that a tin trunk and mattress = had vanished from the cottage, and a rope and three mats from the owner's boat. If the area had been bitten off by the shark while Smith was still alive, this would fatpur ac- cidental death or suicide; Sir' Sydney Smith, famous Profeaspr of Forensic Medicine at Edina burgh University, happened to be in Sydney on a round-the- world trip at the time, so he was asked to examine the arm and give an opinion on this point, He found that it had been severed at the shoulder by a clean-cut incision, not bitten off. He went further. The condition of the blood and tissues suggeetl- ed that it had been amputated, some hours after death. In a deeply absorbing gccourit, of his criminal casel4lItdatly Murder"—Sir Sydney xionelitdes that Smith was killed by his eompanion in a quarrel, his body probably cut up in the cottage on the mattress and mats taken from the boat, and the parts placed in the tin trunk—except for the arm. Unable to' get this into the packed trunk, the murderer at.. • tached it to the outside with, thi,'" rope frOm the boat, tying one end of it round the wrist. The trunk, mattress and. mats-were then taken out to Sea andfitiiiript=. ed, but the arm worked" loose and was swallowed by the shark. "What a queer. Series of coin- cidences it was that brought the crime to light!" Sir Sydney com- ments. "The trunk was just i little too small to take ,all the remains, and the only part of •the . body-with a distinguishing mark was the part left Out." This part worked loose, and was swallow- ed whole by the shark, and; out of the thousands of sharks that infest the beaches of Australia, that particular animal had to be caught alive. Further, that particular shark had to have a stomach upset and"' bring up the arm, thus provid- ing the only clue. There was an arrest and mur- der charge, followed by formal hearings and adjournments pend- ing the inquest. But the Su- preme Court _later decided ' an inquest could be held onLy if there was a body, and one limb, alone was not enough: therefore. It writ was issued stopping fur- ther proceedings.
