The Jailers waited im- patiently as the murderees, brushed and re-brushed her long dark tresses in front of a hand Mirror. "The hangman must not find me untidy and ueattractive," she simPered, For even to the end Mary Cotton was vain about her looks—a beauty that had brought death to se many men, A hundred years have passed since this evil poisoner exerted her terrible sway over men and children, dealing out death as easily as a normal woman would give way to an outburst of tem- per. Mary was the pretty daughter of a Durham miner in the vil- lage of Rainton, near Sunderland. Her father died when she, was fourteen, and a wealthy family at near-by South Hetton offered the girl a job as a maid, But her mother had meanwhile started a school. It was so successful that she invited her daughter to re- turn to teach the infants. Mary had a way with her pu- pils. They loved her and, accus- tomed to harsh conditions, ac- cepted her, severe punishments for inattention or misbehaviour without complaint. Then Many begah Courting. At twenty, she married Bill Mow- bray,. who worked as a farm la- tourer or a miner and sometimes at sea. Mary bore hiin four chil- dren. They all died from a painful gastric complaint. Later, Bill also died, screaming in agony in his last moments. The pretty young widow claim- ed that she was inconsolable. But she no longer had to work. In- surance money from the policies on her children and husband had left her comfortably off. Mary could have sat back and done nothing, but instead she be- camea nurse in the infectious diseases department of Sunder- land Infirmary. Everyone there talked about her ceaseless activ- ity on behalf of the sick, especi- ally in the men's wards. One patient, handsome George Ward, married her as soon as he left, hospital. He died suddenly a few weeks later. Mary sold his possessions, drew the insurance money and went off to the sea- side to assuage her grief. Back in Sunderland, she took lodgings next to a house where a widower called James. Robinson was struggling to look after his four motherless children. "Those poor bairns need a woman's care," Mary told him. "And you have a right to a good meal when you come home." James was flattered that a young and pretty woman should hint so strongly at marriage. He -proposed, and they were married in the summer of 1867. Christmas that year was a mournful occasion in the Robin- son household. A few days before the festivities, the last of the four children died. In the spring; Mary gave birth to a little girl, but she too' died suddenly. James Robinson seems to'have been quite unsuspicious of foul play. But he had a violent quar- rel with his wife over some miss-ing money. Then she left him. After a number of situations„ as a nurse or servant, where money was always missing before she hastily 'decamped, Mary de- cided to settle in the smelt min- ing village of Walbottle. Once again, she selected lodg- CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING Old John Stew received his new quill pen as usual this year. Every April for more than a00 years the Lord Mayor of Lon- don has placed a new pen in the hand of the quaint marble and alabaster monument to this famOus historian of London. It is in the church of St. An- drew Undershaft, off Leaden, hall Street, where Stow was buried following his death on April 5th, 1605, His widow erect- ed it as a memorial to her tailor-husband whose passion for antiquarian research made him the world's great authority on London and its history, Ir shows him writing a book, This lean man with small bright eyes and a cheerful coun- tenance walked hundreds of miles — he could never afford a horse — for many years col- lecting and transcribing ancient documents and delving into Lon- don't fascinating past. But his findings, published in "A Survey of London” in 1598, were, in effect, a "short cut" for people who wanted to learn about London during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Some experts think Stow' probebly knew Shakespeare. or at, least passed' him often in the' etreeis, He 'certainly knew BO ,MU'S* who relates how die day' he and Stow met two trip- • pled beggars. Stow asked them what they would take to accept him as one of their order. At the age of eighty Stow actually received as an acknow- ledgement of his public services the royal' licence td beg for twelve months. He is said , to have "set up basins for alms' in the streets of the London he loved, but the citizens gave him very little and he died in pov-. erty. EAST:- TORONTO PHOTOGRAPHY logs next door to a widower with children. His name was. Fred Cotton, and when he proposed marriage, she accepted, Blithely, she stipulated that the ceremony' should take place at St. Andrews, Newcastle — the church. in ',Which she had married Bill Mowbray eight years earlier. The fact that her third husband, James" `Robinson, was still alive not far away did not worry her. But, to avoid trouble and evade the carping criticism and innuen- does of prying in-laws, the new bride pegged her husband to move away to Bishop Auckland, Fred Cotton agreed and got a job, as a miner at Bishop Auck- land: With it went a small cottage and in this he installed Mary, now expecting. another baby, and' his own two sons by his first marriage. On the first day after the re- moval, Mary called at an insur- ance- office and took out three policies — on her husband and two stepsons. Fred Cotton died shortly after Mary's child was born, He col- lapsed at work in agony, was car- Tied home and succumbed in his wife's_ arms, The undue taste with which. Mary carried out this murder was because she had met an old flame—a handsome man named Joe Nattrass. SAVE! STAMPS AND ,COINS Slippery' Crooks There's no end to the tricks devised by crooks. Some ,are simple tricks like that of the woman shoptilter who sneezed into her handkerchief every time she stole an article.' Any- one watching her naturally looked at' the hand with the ,handkerchief — they didn't _ ,see that the other hand was thieving. - Another device for. distracting attention led to the escape of a man from police'custody recent- ly. As prisoners were filing out to a police van in the station yard one of them collapsed in an apparent faint. While the jail- ' er's attention was distracted, another prisoner escaped. Some Polish crooks crept into a police station one night, re- moved all the boots they could find and left the police snoring peacefully. Then they carried out- a series of burglaries, but when the alarm was given the police took so long to' find the footvvare• that the thieves got away. An English burglar's method was to strew carpet tacks round the beds of his sleeping vic- tims in case anyone woke up and decided-to chase him. LIVESTOCK REMEDIES 11'S THE FAMILY CELEBRATION Of THE YEAR QUEEN!" :HOLIDAY m 18,Tik Joe Nattrass moved into Mary's house as a lodger. Shortly after- wards, she got rid of her own baby and one stepson. There tiring of her lover, she poisoned Joe Nattrass—after en- suring that he had made a will leaving' his, possessions to, her. Thie murder, howevere brought her only $100. Free once more and reasonably well off, Mary. had only one problem, People were beginning to gossip, and it was for this rea- son that she, had not. killed Charles, her eight-year-old step- son But she did, not intend to be saddled with him all her life .and demanded at the local work- house that the boy be taken in. The master said that he had no room and that stepchildren. were not eligible unless there were family circumstances of extreme. poverty. The well-dressed Mary Cotton could not pretend that this 'applied to her. She grabbed little Charles by the arm and said: "It won't mat- ter. He's weakly, like all the Cot- ton family. I don't expect he'll live Jong." A Month later the boy was dead of "gastritis." The workhouse master heard Of the death and pondered on the uncanny truth. of Mrs. Cot- ton's prophecyeHe told the police, and the body of little Charles was exhumed. It contained suf- ficient arsenic to kill a dozen adults,. The long trail of death was followed by the police through graveyard after graveyard in Northumberland and Durham. Mary had been lavish with her eupplida of arsenic. Every corpse contained five 'or ten times the • lethal dose, For legal reasons, she was tried only for the 'Murder of the boy Charles. Her defence was ingeni- oda. The bedreorris in the house had been papered' with green wallpaper. She had, she said, with a pas- sionate desire for cleanliness, constantly scrubbed out the remise with decorator's'' green soap. 13pth soap and wallpaper were well khdevii to have arsenic es the base Of their colouring.
