When a tunnel had no tow-
path, boats we.e shafted through,
that is, poled along by pressing
on the sides or roof of the tun-
nel with an iron-tipped shaft
while walking along the boat—
a tricky job in the dark, In one
tunnel—the Crimson Hill on ,the
Chard,Carial—a course 'Of brick-
work on the sidee seems to
have been laid so that purchase
would be given to shafts; -else-

ing was legging. Here is, a de-
scription of legging a boat
through. Crick tunnel, written in
1815:
"The tunnel is built of suffi-
cient width to admit of two
Boats passing, but our Boat did
not come near either side, and ,
to' get her through the men laid
a plank across the fore part of
the Boat which reached near to
the sides of the Tunnel—upon.
each end of this plank a man
laid himself down upon his back,
and their feet' touching the wall
they pushed the Boat forward
by crossing their' legs at ,every
step;' but had, either of them'
made' a slip, the other musthave
been thtown off 'his Balance and
both of them precipitated into'
the Tunnel—this was a danger-
ous and laborious employment,
but being accustomed:to it, they
legged us through - iii' 47 min-
utes a distance of 1,518 yards."

Horrified, the pilot listened' to

When they clambered hapPily

back to Florida, they assumed
the gas tanks had been refuelled.
But the mechanic had forgotten
to do so. They hadn't checked.
And now it was too late . . .
They were three 'miles off the
coast of Florida and facing death
through someone's carelessness:
Skillfully, the pilot brought the
plane down on the water, and all
six clambered out On to a wing.
Then they became aware of a
second terrible oversight .they,
had no lifejackets!
Slowly the plane. sank, and
the fathers struggled desperately
in the choppy sea to support
their Children. The sea became
tougher. When help came, the

'Moving Through
A Canal Tunnel
suppose everyone feels a
thrill in a tunnel, but on a rail-
way the' speed of the train and
the lighted compartment take
away much of it. In a canal tun-
nel, however, one moves slowly '
to the put-put-put of the engine
through an underground. world
only dimly lit by the headlamp,
except where an airshaft throws
a circle ofe light upon the water.
The dark and irregular bricks
of the curving roof glisten in
many colours with moisture, and•
every now and then a, drip goei
down one's neck or. a thin stream
from some small spring patters •
against one's hat. Behind, the
world has 'gone, and ahead' that
tiny spot of light will take half
an hour or so to become a
glimpse of sky.
There' were mine tunnels' be-
fore canals, but when engineers,
began to build canal tunnels
they had, much to learn that was,
new. In those days gunpowder
was used for blasting, and for
the rest its was pick-and-shovel•
work by the light of tallow
candles, Tunnelling from, each
end was too slow by these
methods; and therefore shafts
were sunk from the top. of the
hill to the line of the tunnel,
which would then be extended
in both directions from the bot-
tom of the shafts. In this way
more men could be got to work,
and* it was easier to .dispose of
the soil, which was hauled up
the shafts in baskets by a horse-
windlass. The resulting heaps of
soil, mark the line of many canal
tunnels, and are. very character- .
istic once one knows what they
are. When the tunnel was fin-
ished, most' of the shafts were
usually covered, but some were
left to give ventilation: they us-
ually have a circular brick 'top.
