Head Shrinkers
Along the Maranon River (as
the upper Amazon is called) in
Peru, is the Zaruma and Jivaro
country, both tribes being head-
'hunters, who perform the head
shrinking in a highly different
manner. To the south side of the
river along this portion there
are anthropophagi (cannibals)
and savages. On up above, how-
ever, up to the very source, one
strikes milder aborigines in pro-
gressive stages of tameness until
the conquered and spiritless

The poisoned. 'arrows are used

unfit to eat. Most of the heads
they take as trophies are cut

Q. How can I remove the silk
easily from corn when prepar-
ing it for canning or for the

A. Use a small hand brush.
It performs the work much
quicker and easier than the
fingers.
Q. How can T make certain
that cream will not curdle?
A. If the sweetness of cream
seems uncertain, stir a pinch of
soda into it. This will prevent
curdling even in hot coffee.
Q. How can I get rid of red

Tells How To Swim
So you think you know how
to swim.
But can yo u, for instance,
"turn in the water like a
roach," "swimine with hands and
teeth upward," or execute a
"bell turne?"
Have you tested your abilty
"to strike the superficies of the
water" lately?
And how about maneuver:;
such as "to swimme with the
hands together" or "to make a
circle in the water with the
feete?"
Swimmers everywhere and
oven a few non-swimmers—will
be interested to know that Yale
University has just added to Ili
library shelves a book crammed
with instructions in all these
'and still other watery skills. The
book is not for sale, though.
Only one other copy is, known
to exist.'
Yale officials say it is the
oldest English-language book on
.the art of swimming yet to be
'discovered. It .was printed in
1595, bearing . the title: "A '
Short Introduction for to Learne
to Swimme.".
Despite its age, the book de-
scribes a few tricks swimmers
of today might find wondrously
new.
Perhaps you would like to
amaze your friends with this
one, for example:
"There is also a turning which
is called the bell turne, as when
one swimming on his bellie shah
suddainely pull in his feete, and
in stead of striking with them
as is aforesayd, he shall heaving
backward with his foreparts
strike forward with his feete,
which motion will turn him
upon his backe, and because' he.
may at his pleasure turne to
upon his backe and belly as bee
will, it ie• called the bell turne,
resembling also a bell when it is
ringing. , . ."
If that's confusing, you can al-
ways consult t h e. illustrations.
The book contains 43 full-page
woodcuts showing a swimmer
in the various positions describ-
ed in the text.
Another alternative is to con-
sult the original of the Work,
written by one Master Everard,
Digbie& in Latin. The 1595 Enge
lish, version — the one Yale has
— reveals that the material was
"gathered. out of Master Dig-,
biea Booke .of the Art. of Swine.;
initig. And translated into Eng-
lish for the better instruction of
those who understand not the
Latin tongue." (The translator
was' Christofer Middleton.)
The Latin original is slightly
' more available than the transla-
tions. Five copies of 'the Latin
are on record, only two of the
English.
Actually, Yale has "the only
- existiag "complete" copy of the
English vi e r s a. o n, The "other
known copy — saleis ensconced,
at the Bodleian Library of Ox-
' ford taiversity in Erigiancl'eee it

pionships.
Coach Kiphuth will probably
never use this passage to in.
struct one of his backstrokers:
"When one lying upon his
hack with his 'body stretched
toorth, and holding up his breast
as much as hee can, that his
back may lie hollow, which will
keep him from slacking, and
lifting easily one foote after an-
other above the water, and so
drawing them forceable towards
him under the water, they will
pul his body backwards, as in
this example is spewed." (Illus-
tration follows.)
Strange indeed to the modern
ear, but in the 16th- century, a
milestone. As Yale officials re-
mind us, it brought to the ver-
nacular English-speaking world
one of the most popular sports
of all times.
And even non-aquatic schol-
ars, it is presumed, will find
much of lively interest in the
book other than "to -Learne to
Swimme."
But if perchance you, too, be-
come fascinated by the prospect
of "turning in the water like a
roach," you can always write to
the Yale University library.
Who:knows, it might come out
in paperback.
Union Cooperation,
Worthy of note, at a time when
lagging company,profits are caus-
ing the lay-off of many workers,
is a proposal made by the ex-
ecutive committee of the Oil,
Chemical and Atomic Workers
local in Monsanto, Ill, The unions
offered to take a 10-cent-an-
hour cut in production bonus to
help keep the plant operating.
The American Zinc Co plant had
laid off about 125 workers, Costs
still were too high so the com-
pany announced the remaining
225 workers would be laid off'
and the plant shut down tempor-
arily. Then came the union of-
fer to take a cut in pay and the
shut-down plans were cancelled.
By union cooperation, the jobs
of at least 225 Members were
saved, Most will be making
about $4 a week less, but at least
they will be getting a paycheck
and the company will be keep-
ing its production linea going,•

The Canadian. Paeifle railroad
has done Whet the U.S railroads
have been Seared to do—it has
successfully faced dawn an Opers
ging union and ended a .costly
featherbedding practice,
Freight and yard diesel engines
In this country and Canada have
been compelled by union agree-
ments to carry a fireman as. well
as an engineer and a head brake-
man. The fireman, of course, has
no fire to tend, and the brake-
man is in the cab for safety pro-
tection, The three-man diesel
crew was, and still is in this
country, an expensive waste of
manpower, The President of the
Erie railroad, here the other day
for the Transportation 'Institute
at the Sheraton, said it cost his
ro-ad $400,000 a year for this
superfluous third man.
The point we make is that the
CP did something about it, faced
up to a strike, won a favorable
decision and is now able -to lay
off or shift to other jobs a total
of 558 firemen. (Only 73 are ac-
tually laid off, and these have
priority on rehiring.)
Why has no American railroad
done anything about this and
other featherbedding practices?
Why has Congress discreetly
skirted this problem?
The answer is that both are
frightened by labor. .
The &slathers committee of the
Senate, which recently came out
with some wise suggestions for
relieving the financial plight of
the railroads, gave two brief
paragraphs, out of 26 pages, to
the featherbedding problem, and
these merely appealed to the
brotherhoods to co-operate with
the railroads.. .
There has been practically a
conspiracy of silence about feath-
erbedding, even as the railroads
cried out for help. . . ,
Yet labor, which has seen rail
employment drop from 1,363,418
in 1948 to 885,971 in 1958 with
rio sign of stopping, is doing
nothing about it, The railroads,
which are fighting to keep some
share of the transportation busi-
ness, or even to stay out of re-
