DISCUSSED WITH FAVOUR
An entilliPiKatike public! Meeting,.
with a, Ocod rePreSentation of rate,
payers., members of the School'
Beard and (the Brussels Council,
was, held iii the ,nrnasel4 Publie
school on Manley 'night to discuss
school.
Cordon
of building ct,
Cordon Stepnenion, aairman
of the School lloard, presided and
called oa Inspector Kinkead'to ex-
plain the problem(
gr. Kincaid stated that the pre-
sent building has served the coin-
munitY well as both elementary
and eontinaatioa school, for many
yearii,
Th e problem„he pointed out,
which faces the Board and tbe rate-
payers is that „cost of renovat-
ing the building may be a greater
burden - on the taxpayers than
would be the construction of a new
school. A survey of the building in-
dicates the following:
(a) (There has been considerable
settling as shown by the
many cracks in the class-
room walls..
(b) It would be necessary to re-
finish the walls, plastering
or some other scheme.
(c) The stairs must be replaced.
The floors are 14 bad shape,
There are no fire escapes.
The present wooden stairs
provide the only escape from
the second floor.
The heating plant should be
replaced entirely.
(c) The window sash and frames
must be replaced. The poor
natural lighting in the bless-
rooms would not warrant
the replacement of 'the wind-
ows in their present position.
(f) The maintenance of the pre-
-Sent building and the cost of
heating are major expenditures
The Board faces the problem of
deciding whether to begin a ren-
ovation 'program at this time. They
have secured estimates of the cost
of the work. They know that $25,000
to $35,000 could be spent, and only
it portion of this would be eligible
for legislative grails; If 05,000
were spent it is probable that
$25,000 would be paid by the
ra(t'epaiyers of 'Brussels and you
would halve a renovated build
ling which would be adequate for a I
per!tocl" of years, However, the
maintenance costs would be great- t
er than they would be on a new
school,
An architect's estimate of a new
four.room school s as follows:
Cost of Land - This could assn.
nine to be 'balanced out by the
sale of existing and and build-
ings
Coist of building - $65,000
Architect's fee - 6% - 3,900
Furnishings
Equipment 6,000
Total Capital Cost " $74,900
To make certain that the estimate
would be high enough:to provide for
centingendes, itmight be well to
increase the estimate to $80,000.
Legislatifre Grant -- 55%'

meant so much to every service i
man while 'away on active service.
;The Ladies Auxiliary to the Can- ;

We understand that the Ladles

Informative eiening at Blyth last
week when the Zone Rally met.
= It is only by attending these Zone i
Hall's and meetings that full bene-
fits of being a member can be ob-
tained, for it is through these ;
meetings that full benefits of ;
being a member can be obtained,
for it is through these meetings
that we are able to find out 'just
what other districts and branches
are doing and how our own efforts
compare with them.
These days of uncertainty and
'unrest in many parts of the world. i.
make it more important to keep
banded together' in our free coun-
