"PRESTONE" BRAND ANTI-FREEZE
has all the protective power your engine needs
In the past ten years, the horse-power of car engines has
gone up—and up—and up. It had to be—because the
car you drive today needs more power—for today's
performance. So you can see that with a more powerful
engine there'll 'be more demands on the cooling systen1
—and more at stake if anything goes wrong with that
cooling system. In addition to the freeze-up protection
that anti-freeze gives you, your car needs the complete
protection that "Prestone" Brand Anti-Freeze provides,
You see, it's not only frost that can stop anti-freeze
circulating in your radiator. Particles of rust can clog
it—corrosion can cause a leak—the water pump can
deteriorate. "Prestone" Brand Anti-Freeze protects
against these risks, too. Special inhibitors prevent rilst,
arid clogging. A unique Polar Film coats every part of'
your car's cooling system—seals it against corrosion
and deterioration, And a special anti-foaming ingredient,
makes sure that the anti-freeze will not foam out of
the top of the radiator,
Your car should have the protective power of
"Preston" Brand Anti-Freeze-be sure you insist on
it for trouble-free, Winter driving.

DQg$ And
'Amburgers1
The soelety reporter of one of
the most respected. and ttuthori-
tatty° English newspapers, re-
porting on the great reeeptieti
end garden party given at Buck-
Ingham Niece in honor of the
American Bar Association, ex.,
plained an Baas Ol develop..
Merit in the following words:
"In addition to the normal
Palace garden4 party menu, 'hot
clogs' and 'wimpeys'— slices of
fresh meat sausages seasoned
with tomato ketchup and French
mustard and placed in circular
sweet buns — were served,"
If We rush in where Angles
and Saxons usually fear to tread
it is only because the paragraph,
having behind it such a weight
of all thority, if uncorrected
would almost certainly give
those who have not themselves
met hot dogs and hamburgers a
rather false impression of them
and might even set society at
odds against itself,
It simply will not do if the
Impression is allowed to gain
ground in one section of the ,
community that American food
consists of slices of fresh meat
sausages seasoned with tomato
ketchup and. French mustard
and placed in circular sweet
buns and called either "het dogs', or ewimpoys,,,
For it was a delightful gesture
to serve American snacks at the
garden party. It was all that
was needed to naturalize both
the hot dog and the hamburger
over here officially. And our
agent at the Palace reception re-
pqrts that the -snacks served so
hospitably to 5,000 members of
the Bar Association and their
wives were, in his judgement,
both quite traditional and cor-
rect, except that they were suit-
ably scaled down in size.
On social occasions in ,Eng-
land when, for instance, sand-
wiches are served, the sand-
wiches are properly made of
delicate slices of bread and are
cut to an area of two or three
square inches. One does not
serve doorsteps nine .square
inches in surface area. And so
on this occasion a nice English
compromise was made and the
hot dogs were what you Might
call "petits chiens," like petits
fours, whole sausages in minia-
ture between small roils. The
wimpeys were "beTheburgers."
Perhaps Britain has made a con-
tribution thereby to the Atlan-
tic way of life and may expand
for Americans their own rather
static concept of hot dogs and
hamburgers.
This concept, however, in its
own way and its own turn is
already making a contribution
to the British way of life.
Personally I am not yet much
of a hot-dog man — I still winch
slightly when I see them 'sell-
ing hot dogs almost secretly
round the „ career behilid'` the
Mound stand at Lord's Cricket
Ground — but hamburgers now
are a different thing altogether.
They are bringing to Britain not
only a useful addition to the
luncheon menu but • a trans-
Atlantic aura of neatness and
efficiency.
The hamburger, for instance,
has literally transformed a cor-
ner of Waterloo railroad station.
There used to be at • Waterloo
a small circular buffet, known
to seine of us as the Buffet of
Outrageous Fortune. I remem-
ber it for its dull and foggy —
almost rainy — air and its lack-
luster Bath buns. The custom-
ers gave the impression not of
waiting eagerly far trains but of
having all just missed them,
writes John Allan May in The
Christian. Science Monitor.
It belongs to the past. It is
gone. It is forgotten. For one
day to Waterloo there came the
"wimpey." Quite suddenly one
little segment of the circular
buffet gleamed and shone and
sizzled. There Was a deliciohs
aroma of toasting buns and beef
and onions on the griddle. Pert
and pretty little London girls
in clean white coats or aprons
began to serve hamburgers and
hot beverages to startled and de-
lighted travelers,
For a while around the wim-
pey bar the old traditional buf-
fet went on. But it could not
last. And it did not last. The
authorities took a deep breath
and capitulated. They shut the
Buffet of Outrageous Fortune
for a week and utterly trans-
formed it.
Now, called The Horseshoe, it
is a show place. It gleams. I can
quite believe that people delib-
erately miss trains just to sit
there on its rich stools or its
low curved settee and finish
their meals in style. You can
buy English fare there too, like
fresh Bath buns and butter or
sausage rolls or Melton Mow-
bray pies, but the place of hon-
or still is rightly filled by the
wimpey bar.
There are hamburger restau-
rants around Piccadilly and the .
Strand as well. American visi-
tors often cannot get seats there
for all the English fanburgers
who crowdein, Even in the coun-
try, local butchers begin to un-
derstand about ground beef for
hamburgers. This columnist was
recently asked to broadcast
about them on a nationwide
hook-up and explain the barbe-
cue.
The hamburger and the hot
dog in fact have arrived, In
some places it may not yet have,
been appreciated that the true
hot dog requires a particular
type of sausage 'and should not
be made with the common or
Cambridge "banger," but if it
matters it will come in time.
.Of the many inventions credit-
ed to American natural sciences
these two, the hot dog and the
hamburger, are doing as much
as any other to foster mutual
appreciation and international
understanding.
Stan The Man!
In half a dozen ' National
League clubhouses Stan Musial
of the St. Louis Cardinals is
still the game's top player, Not
that it makes any difference, but
the dissenters are probably in
Milwaukee and New York,
where Hank Aaron and Willie
Mays have their own hard core
of followers.
However, Musial has been at
or near the top of the National
League in hits, runs batted in,
and home runs for so long that
the comparison isn't a valid one.
Neither Aaron nor Mays — par-
ticularly Aaron — has been
around long enough to compare
with the Donora greyhound.
Ty Cobb once told baseball
`writer Joe Reichler that Musial
is the best player of his genera-
tion. "Stan is not the greatest
hitter I ever saw, nor the great-
est fielder, and certainly not the
fastest runner, Yet he combines
the three skills so well that
baseball history will chronicle
him as one of the greatest play-
ers of all time before he is
through."
"In this age of the lively ball,"
Cobb continued, "when every-
body.hits 20 homers but few hit
.300 Musial not only slams his
share out of the park but con-
sistently bats around .340. He
would be outstanding no mat-
ter when he played."
Stan has a peculiar batting
stance. He practically turns his
back on the pitcher, with his
right shoulder facing centre
field. He keeps his feet fairly
close together and crouches just
before the t'.,ll is delivered, un-
coiling himself to lash at the ball.
"No wonder they can't pitch
to that guy," former Giant
Coach Tom Sheehan once said;
"he hits at you from around cor-
ners."
Musial's consistency over the
years has been nothing short of
amazing. Here are just a few
of his records:
Established major-league rec-
ord for most home runs in a
double-leader (5), hitting three
in the first game and two ire the
second, May 2, 1954; tied major-
league mark for leading league
in doubles most years (8), 1954;
tied major-league record by
making five hits in a game on
four occasions in one season,
1948; led NL in bases on balls
(105), 1953; led outfielders in
double plays, 1949; and was
named the National League's
most valuable player in 1943,
1940, 1948.
It, is a peculiar thing, but most
persons do not think of Stan
Musial as a home-run hitter.
Yet on baseball's all-time homee
run parade Stan has gone ahead
of such names as. Joe Di Maggio,
Hank Greenberg, and Ralph
Kiner. At last count he had hit
more than 360,
Musial is rarely blanked in the
batter's box. Ile probably had
his best year' in 1948, when he
led the league in. batting (.376);
runs scored (135); base hits
(230); doubles (46);. triples (18);
arid runs batted in (131). At 39
home runs he was only one be-
hind Johnny Mize and Ralph
Kiner, Who tied for the eham- -
pionShip,
If Musial lacks anything, it, is
a spectacular throwing arm. He
can play the outfield and he dab
play first base, but he prefers
the 'former.
Off the field and during the
Winter months Musial' takes care
of hitheell, He tievre allows
himself' to go more than a fetv
pounds aboVe his playing
Weight, arid he exercises fre-
qtteritly.
In a town Which has had such
talented and spectacular
Matt ballplayera as the bean
brothers Frahkie Frisch; Led
tititother, and Pepper Martin,
!Musial remains a special kind Of
favorite. A rare brand Of Care
dlnal indeed`:
