To Live Longer
Don't Shake Hands.
Is handshaking dangerous?
ShOhld it be abolished? And is
it it silly custom, anyway?
Silly questions, you think?
Then listen to a Parkstone, Der,"
set, doctor who. has recently
condemned what he calls the
"silly Western habit of shaking
hands on every possible oeea.
sion,'' lie believes that disease
germs may be transferred, from
hand to hand and that one per- '
son in every three in Britain has
germs on the hands,
This isn't the first time that
a medical man has drawn at-,
tention to the perils of hand-
shaking, Dr. Francisco Sauchil-
11, an American„ pointed out not
long ago that handshaking jars
the nervous system.
"The jar goes up the right
arm, ,distorts the nerves of the
spine and is transmitted to all
parts of the body," he warned.
What are we to do if we stop
shaking hands—rub noses? No,
say the critics of the custom,
All we need do is to bow to
each other.
,Orte London doctor sayS the
most dangerous time to shake
hands is before meals, because
of possible danger from food
poisoning. After he has thor-
oughly washed his hands before
lunch or dinner he makes it 'a
rule never to shake hands until
he has finished the meal.
Three men in Tahiti formed
in 1938 a Bociety for the Aboli-
tion of Miscellaneous Handshak-
ing. They give a military salute
instead of a handshake. On the
office door-of the head buyer of
a Chicago store are the words
"No handshaking, please!"
When a commercial traveller
was asked his opinion, he said:
"Handshakes are often a con-
founded nuisance. They don't
mean anything.' They are ab-
solutely insincere and conven-
tional and I've never known one '
to lead to' a bigger order."
Now hear what a man who -
likes 'the 2,000-year-bid custom
has to say about it:, "It's an es-
sential common courtesy of ev-
eryday life. A handshake estab-
lishes a feeling of friendship'
and comradeship which the
mere curt nod or the slight bow -
can never achieve. It' is the link
between those" who wish each
other -the best that life has to
offer."
