Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.rn. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours Thinking of dear friends, old Melville Ladies enjoy Christmas party Twenty-one members of the Melville Presbyterian Guild gathered at the beauti- fully decorated home of the president, Jeanne Ireland, for their Christmas meeting on December 15. Jeanne opened the meet- ing with a Christmas poem after which familiar carols were sung accompanied by Helen Elliott at the piano. - The scripture from Luke 2 told of Jesus' birth in -the manger at Bethlehem. Mary Huether led in prayer and read a poem called "All Roads Lead Home at Christ- mas." Christmas was described by Eluned McNair as purely a spiritual holiday in the early days. Then pagans gave us the holly with its red berries representing drops of blood on Christ's brow. Mistletoe was wicked and not allowed in churches. Midnight mass be- came popular in the 18th' century. ' "Why Do We Celebrate Christmas?" by Jeanne Ire, land told us that the Christ- mas card originated in Eng- land in 1844 and that Martin • Luther is credited with cutt- ing the first Christmas tree for children. Mince pie is Christian in origin as the spices repre- sent those brought to anoint Christ's body in the tomb. Gifts date to those presented by the Wise Men to the Christ child. The little. Christmas ,Tree who brought joy to a Child- ren's Home brought smiles to our lips. Many memories of Christ- mas concerts of our childhood delighted,'-the members as they answered the roll call. Marguerite Krauter in- vited us to her home for the pot luck supp-er in January and the purchase of artificial flowers for the dinner tables was discussed. A report was given by Leona Armstrong on her purchase of poinsettias and it was decided to give a gift of money to the Callander Nur- sing Home toward the pur- chase of a record player. A social time was enjoyed by all when Santa distributed gifts and Mart: Iftietber, Eluned McNair, and Jeat)p Ireland served refreshnieuts. Something for Everyone and new, and wishing them all a season of unending, old fashioned delights! From the Management and Staff ; a ROYAL BANK . serving Agriculture Brussels
