Although the weather was
gloomy, outside, not so inside
the Nicholson bus which
transported 47 Huron East
District ladies on their trip to
"Christmas at the Lee" on.
December 2.
Our first stop came at the
Jackson Square Shopping
Centre in Hamilton. The
women were given a chance
to eat, shop and browse in
this huge mall. The highlight
of this stop was helping our ,
President, Mrs. Elmer Hard-
ing, purchase a new winter
coat, which she proudly don-
ned and wore for the remain-
der of the journey.
With all, purchases com-
pleted we left the mall to
other Christmas shoppers
and continued on to the
Erland Lee Museum Home.
Upon our arrival we were
met by a very cheerful Mrs.
George Reist who gave us a
few words before we pro-
ceeded with our tour.
The Lee Home was decor-
ated for Christmas with all
hand-made decorations. The
smell of fresh pine branches,
woven with stringed popcorn
and cranberries was most
evident upon entering the
los
kitchen.
Mrs, Verna Maluske greet-
ed everyone in the kitchen
and explained the uses of
various artifacts of yesteryear
found on display. Many of the
articles in the house belong to
the Lee family and others
have been donated.
In the dining room is to be
found the original dining
table which has never been
refinished and is in immacu-
late condition.
Many of the Guelph Area
women were on duty to talk
about and explain various
sections of the Lee HOme.
From the ktichen, baked by
Mrs. Lambert, came a taste of
homemade bread for every-
one. In the Coach House we
were given a home baked
cookie and a glass of hot
apple cider while we roamed
the interior. In the upper
section ladies performing
various crafts were most
enjoyable to watch.
A common remark heard
after our tour was "How did
they ever manage?" Well,
they did it and maybe their
appliances and tools as such,
were just as modern to them
as Ours are today! Saying
goodbye and Merry Christ-
mas to our Area ladies we
moved on.
Dundurn Castle was built
by Sir A. N. McNabb who was
Prime Minister of the Upper
Canada's from 1854-56. He is
noted for bringing the first
railway to Hamilton.
This is some castle! Once
entering the main doors you
find it rather dark at first, but
then those huge chandeliers
catch your eye and youa re off
in awe.
Everything is gorgeous in
the upper two floors but the
servants's quarters, where
the work was done, is a lot
plainer. A servant's lot was
not a glorified one!
The 3-postered bed in the
master bedroom seemed to
catch everyone's eye as there
are not too many of them
around and this one is fabu-
lous!
Imagine yourself in a- long
gown coming down the stairs
to the main hall. As you hnag
on to the magnificent banni-
ster a beautiful picture you
would make. The bannister is
very solid and curvy and
indefinitely not meant for
sliding down. We were in-
formed the McNibb girls
would never have dared!
Back in the main hall
concluded our tour and we
once again boarded the bus,
this time with home as our
destination.
No bus trip is complete
without a sing-song. The
Molesworth gals were very
obliging and lead with verses
from Christmas Carols to
old-time favourites.
