Teachers hear Teresa Holland

VAN DEN HENGEL of Owen
Sound graduated from Wil-
fred Laurier University with
a Master of Social Work
Degree on. May 31, 1981.
She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Louis Blake of R.R.
2, Brussels and the wife of
Jack Van den Hengel a
former Seaforth resident.
Currently, she is employed
by the General and Marine
Hospital, Children's and
Adolescent's unit, Owen
Sound.

Word has been received
that Benjamin Pollard of
Yuba City, California pass-
ed away in his 104th year.
Born in Ethel, Ontario. Sur-
. vived by one son and 3
daughters, a brother, Edward
Pollard of Brussels, 17 grand-
children, 44 great grandchild-
ren and 22 great great grand-
children. Burial took place at
Sutter Cemetery, Yuba City.
Joan Huether, a graduate
of Brussels Public School and
F.E. Madill Secondary School
and at present a third year
accountancy student at Fan-
shawe College, London was
one of the 55 students from
the college honoured for
1980-1981 academic work at
the Twelfth Annual Awards
Night dinner and dance held
at the school on
She received the Society of
Management Accountants'
Award. Mr. and Mrs. Murray
Huether and Mrs. Edna Mc
Donald were also present for
the dinner.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald
Westcott of Mississauga
spent the weekend with Mrs.
Kathleen Danby.
Teresa Holland, district
manager for the Waterloo
area of the. Dale Carnegie
course, and a former Brus-
sels resident was one of the
guest speakers when a Pro-
fessional Development Day
for the six schools in the
North Huron district was
held at the Brussels Public
School recently.
Teachers from the Wing-
ham, Turnberry, East Wa-
wanosh, Brussels, Howick
and Grey schools heard two
speakers at the morning
session -- Mrs. Holland and
Mary Howarth of London of
F.W.T.A.O. who spoke on
' the topic, the Gifted Child, A
Forgotten Pupil. In the after-
noon, teachers attended

ilies on Sunday.
On November 4th, the
evening unit of the Brussels
U.C.W. met at the home of
Jean Bridge Sr., with 12 in
attendance.
President Karen Cardiff
opened the meeting by read-
ing a very thoughtful story. A

given by Isabelle Wheeler
followed by the hymn "On-
ward Christian Soldiers"
sung by all. Gertie Kelling-
ton read the scripture, then
led in prayer. The guest,
Michael Bridge, read his
Legion prize-winning story
"Why I Wear A Poppy".
A very interesting story on
"Remembrance" was read
by Isabelle Wheeler followed
by some ideas on how to
welcome a new Minister's
family to our midst, and how
helpful we could be to them.
"Come Let Us Sing of a
Wonderful Love" was sung
and secretary Joan Bernard
read the minutes of the last
meeting.

Mrs. Holland, the former
Teresa McWhirter, spoke on
the importance of memory
training and the fostering of
better human relations, She
demonstrated learning by
picture and memory associ-
ation and said the Dale
Carnegie method of memory
training uses action, color,
exaggeration and pictures to
teach more effective powers
of recall.
She also outlined the nine
principles of how to build a
better rapport whether it be
with students, parents or
peers; don't criticize, con-
demn or complain but 'offer
suggestions; show honest
and sincere appreciation; a-

several reasons for this: our

mise of equality which, in
'turn, has instilled an inborn

intellectually elite.

makes it very difficult to start
special educational programs
for gifted children and these
suspicions are inherent in.
Bill 82, a new education bill
before the Ontario Legisla-
ture which defines the gifted
child as the child whose
performance is consistently
exceptional in any potentially
valuable area
In determining giftedness,
Bill 82 says that each board
will have a placement com-
mittee of one principal and
two others who will define
and select children for gifted
thou programs.
Mrs, Howarth expressed
great concern over lay per-
sons identifying exceptiona-
lities in children, because
they have not had the proper
training. -
