He was 86 years of age, Born in Grey Township, he was a resident of that town- ship all his life where he farmed during his active years, He was a veteran of the First World War and a member -of Brussels Royal Canadian Legion and of St. Gorrie . • Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Fudger spent the weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Heffernan of Southampton and attended the bapitsm of their infant son. Dan. on Sunday. Rev. George Sach of Beamsville, Mrs. Margaret Thompson and Jeremy of Ripley called on Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Edgar and other friends in the village on Sunday. 4-H Achievement Day will be held Nov. 10 at the Howick Central School at 7 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Austin, Jeffrey and Derek of Elmira visited Sunday with Mrs. Wm Austin. Miss Diane Calker of Cale- donia spent a couple of days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Price. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence McCallum of Wingham ac- companied by Mrs. Sheldon Mann; and Mrs. Murray. Hoover and Carol Ann of Brussels. R.R. 3, visited their Aunt Miss Clara McCallum of Stratford on Sunday. John's. Anglican Church. He is survived by his 'wife, the former Jane Isabel Al. cock; six sons, Torn of London, Frank of Belgrave, WORM, Kenneth and Mur- ray all of Goclerich and Ross of Grey Township; one dau- ghter Betty (Mrs, Joe Daer) of Clinton, A sister Cora May Alcock and a brother Clif- ford, both of London also survived. 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. He was predeceas- ed by his parents Thomas and Margaret Alcock; a 'sister, ter, Mrs. Fanny Gordon and brother Fred. Rested at the Brussels Chapel of the M.L. Watts Funeral Home and thence to. St. John's Anglican Church for funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Rev. John Swan officiated. Brussels Legion held a ser- vice at the funeral chapel at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pallbearers were Ronnie Gordon, Don Blenkhorn, Cliff Appel, Gordon Blake and Gerald Miller. Flower bearers were four grand- children. HARVEY SPARUNG Charles Harvey Spading' died on Thursday, October 22 in his 98th year. He was born February 23, 1884 on Lot 8, Concession 5 Of Howick Township where he farmed until moving to Gorrie in 1948. In 1909 he married Christina Johnston who pre- deceased him in October 1951. He was also predeceas- ed by a son Clarence in his 53rd year. He was a member of Gorrie Methodist Church and later the United Church, Hehad been a Anernber of the Session and Board A Ste- wards, sang in the church choir fOr over 60 years; played the big bass violin or the cello in two orchestras and sang in male quartettes as well as at many other entertainments in the community, He was also Sunday School superintend- ent for several. years. He helped to organize the First Red Cross Patroitic Society in Howick in 1914 and remained in office for several years. In 1939 he was treasur- er of the Red Cross Society for a number of years. He was a member of the Howick Agri- cultural Society until 1969 when he became an honorary member. He was a member of the Gorrie Senior C,itizens Club and at the age of 84, wrote poetry. At the time of his death, he had wr itten over 100 poems. He was always interested in sports, local, national and interna- tional, Besides his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers. Surviving are 'a daughter, Jean , a daughter-in-law. Mrs. Bernice Ceaser; two granddaughters and five great grandchildren: Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Yvonne) Ged- eke, Sandra, Gregory and Laura; Mr. and Mrs. Edward (Wanda) Roth, Tracy and Cory. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 24 from the M.L. Watts Funeral Home in Giirrie at 2 p.m. with Rev. Lloyd Marint of Gorrie United Church officiating. Pallbearers were Carl Johnston, Harold Robinson, Wm. Thornton, Robert Ed- gar, Artha. Walker and Neilson. Flowerbearers were Everett Sparling and Samuel Johnston. Burial followed in the Gorrie cemetery.
