Retiring Queen of the Furrow Debbie Armstrong of the Wingham area, told the more 300 in attendance Oct, 23 she had enjoyed her year as queen and mentioned many activities attended. She said -the International Plowing Match was a highlight of her year: In 1978, the IPM was held on the farm of Debbie's father, Jim, Miss Arm—. strong wished incoming queen Dianne Oldfield of Seaforth best wishes for the year. Winners in categories not previously published are listed in their order of merit: Ladies nail driving, Marie Hicknell, Debbie Armstrong, and Viola Adams; Men's nail driving, Larry Hicknell, Keith Siemon, and Sam Bradshaw; SENIOR CHAMPION — MPP Murray Elston presented Ken Innes with a trophy as senior champion of the Huron County Plowing Match. JUNIOR CHAMPION — It was father honouring son, as Neil McGavin of R.R. 4, Walton presented the junior champion award to his son Brian. BPS group hears ES AB S ED Brussels Post two trustees BRUSSELS ONTARIO 109th Year — Issue No. 43 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1981 The Brussels Public Home and School Association held it's first meeting on the season on October 20, at the Brussels Public School. The guest speakers were: Don McDonald, Chairman of the Huron County Board of Education and John Elliott, Past Chairman of the Board. Both are elected represent- atives to the Huron County Board of Education for the residents of the Brussels school area. Don spoke on the role and duties of the school trustee and John spoke on school insurance. Don said that since 1816, control of the school system has been vested in locally elected trustees operating within guidelines established by government legislation al- though the trustee has no power on their own, but Over 400 people attended the Guelph Area 42nd An- nual Women's Institute Con- vention held in the B.M. & G. Community Centre in' Brussels on October 22 and 23. The theme was "I need you". Mrs. J.H. Lambert, pre- sident was chairman for Thursday's meeting and Mrs. John Playle was secretary. Mrs. Stewart Anderson led in sing songs throughout the convention. The F.W.I.O. President Mrs. Keith Hiep- Paul R. Munn, 28, of RR. 2, Hensall suffered minor injuries when the brakes failed on the tractor trailer unit he was driving and caused it to overshoot the intersection at County Road 25 and County Road 12 in Walton on Thursday night. The Board functions in three areas: the provision of curriculum ser- vices; provision of facilities and allocation of financial resources. Trustees do a bit of public relations and attend functions such as Home and School meetings, graduation banquets, etc. Also if a student/teacher problem is not solvable through the principal, then the trustees and the director may get involved. John spoke on the Liability Policy with the Huron County Board of Education. Under this policy, the Board has to be proven negligent to obtain a claim. the Huron County Board of Education allows each family to decide on Accident Insurance for their children. The Board has given the leh brought the ladies up to date with. F.W.I.O. work and reminded everyone that the week of February 19 has been set aside as W.I. week. Three County Home Eco- omists had a presentation which showed new products available for sewing and health needs. There were nine P.R.O. displays from the various districts which were explain- ed briefly. Four hundred ladies enjoy- ed the evening banquet with and that the driver's wife and daughter also suffered minor The tractor trailer which had a pup behind it also took out one hydro pole. There Was approximately $300 da- mage to the vehicle. A work crew from Ontario Hydro in Clinton was in Walton on Friday replacing the pole. There followed a session of 'many pertinent" question§ from the floor thoroughly answered by the speakers. Following coffee break Membership Chairman, Jane McDonald reported a total of 27 members. Playground equipment was discussed, with the decision to finish building some equipment for older grades as the group's project for this year. Fund Raising was discuss- ed and the ceramic Christ- mas Tree to be raffled off November 17 is to be dis- played in Cowan's Country Store with tickets available at the store or from any executive members. Brussels and community can be proud of their pipe band. They are always ready to participate in any local occasion and are frequently asked to make . guest appearance in other centres where their music and colourful appearance is appreciated. Classes commen- ced on October 22nd. How fortunate young peole are these days to have the opportunity, right here at home, and have folks willing to encourage them and provide competent instruction, in the rewarding accomplish- ment of figure skating. ***** Hallowe'en! Hallow's Eve, the time for trick or treat callers to come knocking on your door. It is also when would-be-artists get busy decorating main street windows. So, be prepared for visiting ghosts, goblins and assorted weird characters looking for the traditional goodies.•Those business folk with store' front windows had better have the necessary tools ready to clear the usual crude sprawls that will decorate them. The rain, snow and high winds we have had swept the glory of the autumn leaves off the. trees. There has not even been much chance of strolling through the fallen leaves to enjoy the rustle and fragrance of the colourful carpet beneath our feet for it was swiftly made sodden with the rain and snow. The recent Arthritic Campaign held in this community was a successful one. $855.00 was received on the canvass. The Brussels Arthritic Society is undoubtably grateful for the response to their appeal and to the canvassers who made it possible. The prodeeds go into the, fight against a widespread, crippling disease. * * * * * The Brussels Recreation Committee keep up their good work for the community. They are sponsoring a Family Christmas Party, with supper and dancing on November 28th. On December 19 the Recreation Committee will be holding a dance and later on they will be hosting a New Year's Eve dance. Reser, a these dates to enjoy yourselves at these events and add your support to their efforts. Look for particulars elsewhere in this paper. * * *** Speaking of Hallowe'en a reminder to parents might be in order. See that your young fry on their trick or treat rounds wear costumes that make them clearly visible to motorists. Caution them to take care crossing streets. Use make-up on faces, not masks which can interfere with their vision. Let them have their Hallowe'en fun but warn , them not to take risks in their excitement.
