A14 — THE BRUSSELS POST OCTOBER 14, 1981 Mi Visser wins WI scholarship Miss Mary Jane Visser, Seaforth, R.R. 5, was the winner of the Huron County Scholarship last Monday held at Belgrave Women's Institute Hall over 125 ladies from all over Huron County attended this day long event. Mary Jane was unable to be present so her mother accept- ed the certificate and cheque from Jane Muegge, home economist. Mary Jane is studying at Guelph in Family and Consumers' Af- fairs Studies. The Huron West District president Mrs. ,Peter Chandler of St. Helens 410:ided for both sessions. The pianist were Mrs. Nor- man Coultes and Mrs. Clare Van Camp. Mrs. Ross Higgins of Belgrave welcomed all and greetings were brought from Huron South by Mrs. Gordan Papple and from Huron East by Mrs. Elmer Harding, Ford- wich and Mrs. Chandler of Huron West. The secretaries of the Districts gave their reports, Mrs. Ross Higgins Huron West, Mrs. James McMahon R.R. 2, Bluevale, Huron East and Mrs. Papple reported that a report was inavailable as their secretary had just moved away but she gave a short report of their activities. The minutes were adopted as read by the secretary Mrs. Norman Coul- tes. She also read the correspondence which in- cluded thank you letter from recipients of scholarships last year, Dianne Godkin Sea- forth and Karen Whitmore, R.R. 2, Seaforth. Mrs. Coul- tes announced that mobile radio record player had been purchased at Huronview with the $198.75 the County Rally had given them. A letter from Family and Childrens Services, John Penn thank- ing the W.I.'s for their bursary which amounted to $651.00 for continuing edu- cation for a Ward of that Society. Mrs. Coultes gave the financial statement show- ing a balance of $205.38. The auditors, Jean Anderson and Mary Hunter reported that the books had been audited and there is excellent order. Mrs. Doris Batkin, Clinton secretary of the Huron Coun - ty Historial Society gave a detailed report of the past year and brought greetings On Monday Mr. and Mrs. Roily Achilles were Thanks- giving dinner guests with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sills and family of Seaforth. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Watson were recent visitors with Mr.a nd Mrs. Don Maier and family, of Thamesford. Weekend guests for the Thanksgiving holiday with Mr. and Mrs, Stewart Hum- phries and Mr. William Ben- nett were Miss Kim Humph- rieS R,N. and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Humphries and family of London. Jason Shortreed, son the Mr, and Mrs. Bill Shortreed is a patient in the hospital in London, having required sur gery Friday, We hope he is soon able to return home. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Prit- chard and son Paul and friend Kelly Oak of London had their from that organization. She thanked the Women's Insti tutes in the County for sponsoring meetings when they come to their communi- ities. She stated that more people are becoming aware of their heritage and become very proud. She invited all to come and see the archives room in Goderich and showed the .catalogue of historical items that are stored there. Mrs. Molly Cox of the Goderich Township Women's Institutes gave two humorous readings. Greetings from the Federated Women's Insti- tutes of the London area and Mrs. N. Coghlin for the Guelph area. Miss Chris Brady and Miss Ann Miller of the Family and Children Services gave a report how the Bursary mon- ey has been spent on a ward in their care. They explained the courses which these girls are studying and thanked the members for their support in this project. Jane Muegge, home economist for Huron County gave the report telling about the 4-H program and the senior courses available this coming year. There is a great many girls enrolled in which came first? The chicken or the egg and she is looking for- ward to the quilt course for senior members. Mrs. Evalina Webster of Blyth spoke on Huronview and thanked the ladies for their support at the recent bazaar. She also spoke on the need for more wheel chairs to help move the older citizens from one place to another in Huronview. The president Mrs. Leone Lock- hart was unable to be pre- sent. Lunch was served by the members of the Belgrave Branch and a social time enjoyed. The afternoon session was opened by the singing of 0 Canada. A slide presentation by Connie Jamieson of the Jack Reavie Opportunity Workshop, Wingham was enjoyed. She spoke of the Lifeskill program for the slow learner that is available and told the many jobs they can learn to do. In her comments on her slides she told about the crowded conditions and their wish to build or move Thanksgiving dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Dave Watson on Sunday. into larger buildings. Mrs. Verna Brown of the Maitland Branch gave a read- ing- October smiles at you. The guest speaker, Mr. Arthur Scott, minister of Ashfield and St. Helens Unit- ed Church was introduced by Mrs. G. McPherson ofthe St. I-L/lens Branch. As this is the year of the Disabled, Mr. Scott gave a very inspiring message talking about his life since blindness came to him early in his life. He told of his dreams to become a minister of the Church and some of the trials he encountered in try- ing to reach that goal. He ,Stated that if one believes in ones self and say I can instead of I can't one finds out soon that their goal can be reach- ed. He pointed out that it is not what we say that counts but what we do in our lives and pointed out that the handicap person can. In clo- sing he reveiwed the deter- mination and the goals that the late Terry Fox set for himself. Mrs. Eleanor Brad- nock of Auburn thanked him and presented him with a gift. Mrs. Gordan Papple, pres- ident of London area brought greetings and invited all tot the convention at St. Marys Euchre popular in Ethel Correspondent MRS. CLIFF BRAY 887.6086 A euchre party was held in the Ethel Community Cen- tre on Monday evening, October 5 with 10 tables played. It was sponsored by there Ethel W.I. Jane fvluegge presented the tray. The Voice of Life group held a walk-a-thon on Sept. 26 and despite rainy weather the event was a huge success. Approximately 100 people participated in the walk for fe, including Murray El- ston M.P.P. The group's grateful to all the organizers, walkers and most of all for the willingness of the sponsors who supported and made the Bluevale Mr. and Mrs. John Spivey of Ingersol spent last week- end with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Henning. Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Walker, Sheila and Kevin were Marie Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Skinn, Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Gray. Rena Chalkin of Kitchener spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. R.J. McMurray and all attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Herd in Port Elgin.
