Huronview
The Board of Manage-
ment for the Perth-Huron
Branch of the Victorian
Order of Nurses, held its
final meeting before summer
recess on June 23.
The meeting, held in the
board room of Huronview,
Clinton, was attended by
members from both counties.
Several topics were discuss-
ed and plans finalized to
maintain optimal functioning
of the branch during the
summer months.
Effective July 1st, Jean
Murdock of Godetich will act
as senior nurse for Huron
County. The office will soon
have its headquartes on the
2nd floor of the new addition
at Huronview, where the
VON will be close to co-work-
ers in the health care field.
Mrs. Murdock's appoint-
ment will bring the number
of full-time nursing staff to
10.5, complemented by 13
relief staff, all headed by
District Director, Gwen
Berry.
Increased nursing staff has
necessitated an increase in
clerical staff to 1 1/2 full time
and one casual secretary
The VON will begin
'planning for increased ex-
pansion of all staff as the
local Home Care Programs
expand to provide chronic
care by 1982.

Prosomillett in corn a problem
Prosom, illet, an annual, grass that can
lettuce crop yields by, up to 50 per cent, has
gained a foothold across ,the province but its
most serious concentration is in the Seaforth
area, according to spokesmen from the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF)
and Centralia College. ,
"It's been• spotted throughout Perth and
Huron," explained Pat Lynch, a soil and
crops specialist with OMAF in Stratford.
"It's throughout the province, but it's not as
serious as it is in that one area,.
"I have no idea why the Seaforth area,"
continued Mr. Lynch in a telephone
interview, "but it bandy from Varna through
Seafor,th, 1Landesboro and Blyth."
Th ough, research is continuing, there is
currently no product available to completely
control prosomillet. ,
"It's just one of those new grasses ,that's
comee up,", said Jim O'Toole, head of ,the
crops section of, Centralia College, who is
studying ,the growth of ,the grass and its
competition with other crops. "It's probably
worst in corn, as well as soy beans and white
beans."
While the grass is new with respect to its
invasion of area fields it has,, in fact, been
known and grown as a crop for 2000 years,
added Mr. O'Toole. It's a commercial crop
grown in Ontario primarily as bird seed,
noted the researcher.
With the absence of an effective herbicide
there are still other options, open to the
farmer to, combat the prosomillet's assault
on his crops.

beth Street in Brussels who

Bill and Margaret McInnes,
"It usually starts along, fence rows or
laneways," said Mr. O'Toole, who added
that plowing or spraying at this stage will
help control the advance of the grass. These
steps • Ithould he, taken by, the first of August
before the prosomillet goes, to seed.
If the grass is moved into the field, the
researcher estimates as much as half of it,
that in rows, can be killed off with, the
herbicide linuren (lorox). Mr. o'Toole
recommends drop nozzles used on skid
models be used for spraying.
A long range defense against prosomillet
infestation is crop rotation, he added,
preferably barley or wheat. This method, the
best available according to Mr. O'Toole,
serves to "cut down, the amount of seed
going back into the soil."
Bob Eckert, a farmer at R.R. 1 Seafor,th
said he noticed the grass in his corn crop
about three weeks ago,, ,
"I don't know what to do about, it," said
Mr. Eckert in a phone interview Monday. "I
can just keep scuffling it."
"It's mainly in the corn, and ,it really
reducesi the yield. It's hard to say how bad it
will be, though.",
Although prosomillet had been farmed
through the region in the past three or four
decades, the grass hadn't arisen as, a serious
prohlem until five years ago, noted Mr.
O'Toole.
"We saw it here first in 1976," he
explained,. "It may have been on one or two
farms before then. We've known about it for
Islands, Manado, South Pa-
cific.
Mrs. Smith heard about
this on Daily Christian Tele;
vision when the man in
charge was on the program..

three or four years, but it was just in the

,The problem is not lim, ited , to Ontario.
Northern American states of North Dakota,
Minnesota, but especially Wipconson, are
suffering as well, and Mr. O'Toole speculat-
ed there may be a relation between the
spread of the grass in Ontario at the same
time as in the States..
"There's an awful lot of weed ,ana
equipment that moves back and forth
between, here and Wisconsin," he said.
Mr. ,O'Toole said farmers should have
little trouble identifying the annual grass in
their fields. He said if `he tiny plants are

WORKING ON IT
The Centralia researcher remains optimi-
stic. "We don't have answers," he, said,
"that's for sure. put we're working ,on it.
There are some promising chemicals on the
horizon." , ,
, Mr. O'Toole recommended farmers
consult OMAF publication 75, guide To
Chemical, Weed Control, 1981, for further
information.
