The process seems Earlier this month, several enthusiastic young urbanites with a keen interest in agri- culture applied to participate in the 1981 Junior Agricul- turalist Program. They will soon be in our rural commun- ity doing things that they never though they would have an opportunity to do - haying, milking, driving tractor, picking stones - all the things that are part of a ..iay's work on a farm. The Junior Aggies are out on the farms to learn about producive agriculture and rural farm life. By the end of the summer each participant quite natural for a doctor to use in analysing the state of health, of the human body. The doctor knows that cer- tain body functions and mnditions tryst persist for the body to operate in a normal manner. He estab- lishes a group of meaningful criteria (temperature, blood pressure, etc.) and deter- mines what's normal. He then decides what deviation is a.ccep, table within the confines of good health, and should have a better appre- ciation of this business of farming. Farmers as well as students harvest benefits from the program. It provid- es help for the host farmer during the busy summer months and gives them a chance to work with young enthusiastic people. This fanner, who is in the swine farrow-finish business, said at that time "I'm hroke". We have monitored his progress for three years. Since that time he has doubled the number of sows from 60 to 120, He markets more weaner pigs and, fewer market hogs. He has borrow- ed more long term money. And he has renovated facil- ities and, implemented a number of management practices, e.g. ear notching, feed analysis, herd health Plan, PriKlaCti6 records system. He has identified five major factors that retarded his farm operation: crop fail- ure in 1979; pig disease that killed 200 pigs in 1979; an extra $12,000 of unat4ieipat- e0 expense for renovation not covered by an increased F.C.C. loan; record high interest rates; very low pork prices. That's the bad news. The goodo news is that he is still farming. He is still optimist- k. His banker has , been understanding. His product- ion of pigs per sow per year is now 16 (it was 12). And the price, of pigs has recently improved. But, the easy went to pay interest. Yet, he Maintained his own, , Re came close to paying income tai. His equity improved slightly.
