The program is specially designed to help those living alone to maintain indepen- dence. Accidents in the home are common. A call a day assures help to an injured or ill person, and besides being a safety precaution, provides valuable social contact. Clients may request the service them :selves or be referred by family. .A $2 registration fee for the year may be charged which helps to cover the initial costs involved' in setting up the program: Volunteers must be caring, able to discern problems, handle emergencies and above all understand the necessity of confidentiality. The volunteer will call at the same time each day - a time agreed on by both volunteer and client. He or she will have a list of emergency numbers includ- ing fire, police,, ambulance and doctor. If the client does not answer, the volunteer will call a neighbour, friend or police department or go personally to make the house check. In most cases the client will file a key with a trusted friend, neighbour or the police department. The volunteer will be com- mitted to making one call a day which should last only five minutes unless a prob- lem in involved. Each volun- teer will have no more than two clients. If the volunteer is going away, he or she will have a stand-by volunteer do, the calling. The client will be informed that someone else will be calling. If the client is going away, he or she will notify the volunteer. This program is aimed at helping those that need the help the most, but are always too proud to ask for it - senior citizens and handicapped who live alone. A short session will be held to familiarize volunteers with their duties, responsi- bilities and service proce- dure. Volunteers are urgently needed but must make a definite commitment to be near the phone at the speci- ied time each day. If you are interested in helping some- one please contact Karen Cardiff at 887-6164; Rene Richmond 887-9340 or Betty Campbell 887-6672. Anyone who would like to be a client and benefit from this service also get in touch with the above people. The U.C.W feels there is a defin- ite need for this service and hopes seniors do too. .biplitS.Vest A ^4 &&&& a..e V UCW will sponsor telephone reassurance Kids offered drama ' Jane De Vries 2W41 Jim Coultes 2W38 Ken lnnes 2W35 Ruth Hupfer 2W34 Les Douglas 2W31 Marj Coultes 2W31 George Johnston 2W30 Wilma Hemingway 2W22 Vera Hupfer 2W21 Mary Turvey 2W18 -e sMr Over 90 members of the Smith family gathered at the Walton Community Hall on June 21 for a time of visiting fun and fellowship.
