John Vance Cheney **••• Have you visited the Callander Nursing Home yet this week? This ,is nursing haute week and a visit from you would be welcome. Only two reported using drugs. The results of the survey should be of special concern to parents.Conducted by the Huton County Public Health Unit, it was undertaken to learn the direction public health should take in programs for county adolescents, People perhaps have been overly concerned with drugs in regard to adolescents when alcohol appears to be the real problem. There are far trio many accidents, killing and maiming. Kindergarten • There was only a slight decrease in the number of children registering for Brussels Public School kindergarten for September 1981 compared to those who registered for SepteMber 1980. This year when registration Was held at Brussels Public School 19 registered for September 1981 as compared to 22 last Septernber. At Walton Public School, 24 registered compared with 22 at this time last year, Grey Central had registration of 30 which is up, little from last year, East Wawanosh Public Sehool had a registration of /0, up one front last year's -total of 19, teenagers in alcohol-related incidents. * * • • * Why youngsters prefer to ride their bike s on sidewalks rather than on the street, is understandable. On the sidewalk they do not have to contend with vehicle traffic ,and no deubt feel safer. However, they should be more aware of, and cautious of, pedestrians, particularly those they are approaching from behind. Bicycles make little noise and can came up behind someone when they are completely unaware of it. A short time ago an elderly lady had, a bike narrowly miss her when attempting to pass. The rider, had to jump the bike over the curb and shoot into the street to avoid her. It was fortunate there was not a car coming or there might have been a serious accident., There is no guarantee that a person is going to walk in a straight line. They may change direction, to look at a window display, enter a Moro., cross the street, etc. and step directly into the path of the bike. If children are riding on the sidewalk they shonld approach pedestrians with extreme caution to prevent what could be a serious accident and for their own safety. ***• * A police officer in the U.,S.
