The old arena bites the dust

of 1931, and was 'ready for use when
wintertime came, but unfortunately there
wasn't any ice, because it wasn't cold
enough. Finally in March it was cold and
hockey was played all through March and
into the first of April.
For 10 years before that, BrusSels didrit
have an arena. There had been one in the
same place as the one that was just torn
down, but the man who built it sold it and
moved away in 1922. Mr. Hoover thought it
was built about 1912. "I know I learned to
skate in it when I was a lad," he said.
Mr. Hoover remembers the contract price
for putting up the 1931 building as $6800 and
that for two or three years before the actual
building different Organizations held card
parties and plays
tart
raise money for it.
He said a card py in the old Own hall
where the Brussels Legion is now had 20 or
30 tables playing euchre or 500 in order to
raise Money. Then thete was some money
-left m a fund from an old Boys Reunion in
1919 or 1920 and it went toward the arena
also.
From these various events, over $4000
was raised ftit the new building. When the
arena was built, skating was the main thing,
but eventually hockey progressed quite a bit
and although there was curling for a year or
two it didn't really work out, until the 1960s
when artificial ice was put in, and in 1964 a
curling club was started once more.
In February in 1976, the
Ministry of Labour, in a continuing program
of arena inspections asked council to have
the old building examined. The verdict• was
that it did not meet building. Code standards
and renovation costs were estimated at
$250,000, The people of the Brussels area
decided to go ahead with the building of a
new arena conipleting it in November of
1977.
Although it's not fair to compare the price
of the two buildings Since there's So much
difference hi their structure it is interesting
to note that the total cost of the new arena
building complete with furnishings was
approximately $900,000.
