Earlier this year, Brussels council sold the old arena building to Duel-Trade Insulation of St. Thomas at a price of $5000 and last week a group of Mennonites was busy • tearing it down. There was great difficulty in trying to track down some of the history of the old structure which was built in 1931. Some council meeting minutes for 1931, however, indicated that on April 6, 1931, it was moved by Willis, seconded by Clouse, "that the Berk be instructed to prepare a by-law for borrowing the sum of $3000 to assist in the erection of a skating and curling rink. This amount to be repayable in five years to be provided for by the issue of debentures bearing interest at the rate of 5% per cent per annum and ' comprising five equal payments of coin= biped. and interest On June 3, 1931, it was moved by Willis, seconded by Clouse that By-law No. 3, 1931 authorizing the borrowing to $3000 to assist in the erection of a skating rink having been approved by a vote of the ratepayers of the municipality be read a third time and fmally passed. Some Brussels residents remember tidbits about the arena, such as Archie Grewar who remembers being the first one to set foot in the new arena and that the first hockey game there was played against Listowel. tie also recalled admission charges for skating as five cents for children, 10 cents, for adults. Norman Hoover of Brussels remembers that the arena was built during the summer Please turn to page 3 Short Shots by Evelyn Kennedy You cannot run away from your weakness; you must sometimes fight it out or perish, and if that be so, why not now and where you stand. That is I will if .I do not wind up in some other country or lose myself in the airport and do not reach my flight in time. Having to leave home at 5:00 a.m. to fly out of Toronto at 8:05 I will not be wide awake and conceivably I will be dopey enough to do something silly. During my stay in Winnipeg I will have charge, on m y own, of my two young grandsons for a few days. It is quite likely, though , that they will be taking care of me rather than I of them. Grandmothers are notoriously a soft touch where grandchildren are concerned. The little rascals all have the tendency to test to find out just how much of soft touch granny really is in regard to discipline. However I do not see any problem ahead. - beyond perhaps pacing the floor from window to window when they do not appear at a specified minute. **** * * o 4 If you have a backyard swimming pool, take every precaution to prevent accidental Please turn to page 2 DECORATION DAY SERVICE -- Members of various organizations in for DeCoration Day services on Sunday.
