For a couple of weeks
now, the people of Brussels
have been puzzled over a
small advertisement in the
Post which announced, S.S.
is coming to Brussels.
Now the mystery is out in
the open. S.S. stands for
Shake Shoppe, the newest
venture by Bob Rowe, owner
of Rowe fuels i and Jerry
Wheeler who took over the
Texan Grill in February.
Previous to that the Texan
Grill had been run by Bruce
and. Sharon Weber who first
took over in June of 1979.
Bob and Anna Coupland had
the Texan Grill before and
ns
before that it belonged to
Sharon Weber's parents,
Ken and June Webster,
Bob and Jerry continue
to work with Rowe Fuels as
well as this, their latest
venture. The former Texan
Grill is now a three way
combination known as J.R.'s
Shake Shoppe, Variety and.

insurance companies gave
them out and they should be
available for somebody who
wants to to build something.
Building permits were
granted to J.L. McCutcheon
for a new house at $85,000;
Neil McDonald for the demo-
lition of an old building;
Wallace Bell a new roof for
$2000 and Dave Hastings a
double garage for $2000.
Council decided to hold any
further discussion on build-
ing permits until they found
an inspector.
Council passed two by-
laws, one an agreement, with
the Huron County School
Board to have a playground
at the Brussels Public School
and the second one to estab-
lish a playground at the
Brussels Public School. This
was done for the Home and
School Association in order
to make a Wintario grant
possible.
Bill Bremner told council
he had been looking at the
Jack Hall property (gas
station) and was wondering
what council would think of
extra buildings there, such
as a car wash and what types
of restrictions there were.
Reeve Cal Krauter said
it would depend on what
types of buildings were going
up and that the village was
waiting for its zoning plan
this year so they couldn't
give him an answer yet.
Brussels fire chief Howard
Bernard and fireman Harold
Bridge presented a budget of
about $4,000 to council.
Needed are a brief case for
Mr. Bridge, a filing cabinet
that would lock for the fire
hall and hoses. Council was
also asked if the fire depart-
ment could have $2000 to set
aside for such things as fire
school and emergency equip-
ment. Chief Bernard said if
they didn't use the $2000 it
could be put back in the fund
for the new firetruck.
He also told council about
a truck the fire department
had been looking at--a 67
Chevrolet with 45,532 miles
on it and said they were
given a ball park figure of
about $12,000
Council passed a motion
increasing the garbage pick-
up rate from $12 to $15 until
the end of 1982.
Under the recreation re-
port, councillor Gord Work-
man said that the arena
would want about $6,000 set
aside in the budget for a new
water softener.
Council passed a motion
setting road expenditure of
construction at $27,250 and
maintenance at $33,800 for a
total of $61,050.
Council had a request from
Ian McDonald asking that
they consider no parking
by-laws for the boulevards.
Since the village does not
have a by-law enforcement
officer yet, council decided to
file the request for now.
In other business, council
decided to give a donation of
$225 to the Brussels Agricul-
tural Society.
At the last meeting, it was
decided that the clerk should
take sonic action on some of
the old buildings in town. A
letter was sent to Paul
Mitchell, owner of Export
Packers, asking that it be
cleaned up but there was no
reply, Council decided to
send a registered letter ask-
ing him to either meet with
council before the next regu-
lar meeting or else attend
that meeting. Council also
decided to write to Mary
Galley asking for a price on
her lots on Mill Street ex-
plaining that there aren't any
buildable lots but that they
would like them (donned nn
Council had a letter from
councillor Malcolm Jacobs
stating that he was resigning
his position due to business
commit ments. Council de-
cided to hold the resignation
for a month before deciding
what to do.
