Mrs. Robt. McMurray in-
troduced the special guest,
her son, Bob McMurray of
London who has been blind
for about 10 years. He told of
various stages a person pro-
gresses through when you
learn of a handicap. Identity,
depression, anger and frus-
tration arc the feelings which
you have to accept before a
rehabilitation centre can
really help you.
Finding a purpose in life is
the first step. Companion-
ship is essential and he
urged people to speak freely
to handicapped people, blind
people. Blind people see
through our eyes.
He explained how they
learn to handle money, read
Braille, use a cane by sound.
Some also learn to sew, knit,
use dictaphones and type-
writers. Their equipment is
expensive and is not pro-
vided by the Dona-
tions should be ear-marked
for specific areas or they do
not help the blind, only
administrative purposes.
Bob enjoys card games
with a Braille deck, is an
ardent curler and golfer and
also enjoys lawn bowling. He
has a very active, prosperous
and rewarding life, saying
his blindness is not a handi-
cap, just a nuisance.
Mrs. Gordon Mandell ex-
pressed appreciation to Bob
and presented him with a
gift.
