As the junior curling sea-
son comes to an end, we can
all look back on a fun-filled
season. The season started
off in November with a total
of 45 curlers between the
ages of 12 and 18. This is the
largest number of junior
curlers we have had in any
one season.
The amazing thing was
that over one-half of them
were new joiners. This creat-
ed problems when it came
time to select teams as we
did not have enough people
who were experienced
enough to be skips. After
careful consideration, we
came up with 11 teams. On
deciding teams we pick out
11 skips and draw from a hat
for order for picking the rest
of the team. We then decide
who should be the vices and
draw them out of a hat to see
what team they go on.
The first draw was held
from Noveniber to January
and some very interesting
games resulted. We only
play four ends because we
only have one hour (5-6) On
Monday nights to do so.
'Therefore the scores do not
usually get too high. Of
course every team received
sonic expert coaching from
Mary and Murray Huether
and this helped make the
final Scores better.
The results of the first

draw were very favourable in
that teams who had a skip,
who was skipping for the first
time ended up in the top
three spots. The winners
were as follows: first place
with 321/2 points - Brenda
Ten Pas, skip; Ken Higgins -
vice; Scott Cardiff - second
and Cathy Marks - lead.
Second place with 31 points
were Wayne Higgins - skip,
Melinda Hamilton - vice,.
Shawn Bremner - second and
Anne Kernaghan - lead.
Third place with 29 1/2 points
were Ke yin McArter - skip,
Susan Cardiff vice, Sharon
Exel - second (Kevin played
two-thirds of the draw with
only three people). Fourth
place with 28'/2 points were:
Cathy Sholdice - skip, Kerry
Bauer - vice, Steven Marks
second and Marianne Scott -
lead.
The other teams taking the
other positions were skipped
by Brian Ten Pas, David
Hall, Kim *Bauer, Joan Car-
diff, Gary Pipe, Nanci Ben-
nett and June Bremner. In
determing points, fiVe
points were given for a win,'
• three points for a 'tie, one
point for a loss and half a
point for every point in the
game.
The second draw in my
Opinion did not come off as
well as the first draw. There
Were Mete problems in tak-
ing "big" chunks out of the
ice, shooting the rock into the
next tiiik, More gab- Sessions
at the sidelines, more teams
played with less than fotir
people' (one, for exaniole,
played one-half the .dray
with only two) and bigger
losses ; example one
not mentioning any names,
lost 9-0 in four ends. That
must have been one of the
worst nights.
Also, when we tabulated
the points to find a winner we
had a three way tie for first
place. We did manage to
break this tie. Winners were
as follows: first place with 33
points - Wayne Higgins,
skip; Kerry Bauer - vice;
Steven Marks - second and
Kendra Fisher - lead. Second
place with 33 points were:
Kim Bauer - skip; Susan
Cardiff - vice; Shawn Brem-
ner - second; and Scott
Cardiff - lead. Third place
with 33 points were: Doug
Sholdice - skip; Vicki Leis -
vice; Kelly Bauer - second
and Darron Chesher - lead,
and in fourth place with 30
points: Nanci Bennett - skip;
Carla Knight - vice; Sandra
Huether - second and Mike
Smith - lead.
Other teams were skipped
by Brian Ten Pas, June
Bremner, Cathy Sholdice,
Ken Higgins, David Hall,
Brenda Ten Pas and Joan
Cardiff.
Also we have an overall
trophy for the team with the
most points for the season.
The winner this year is
Wayne Higgins and his team
from second draw.

Some of the executive of
the Brussels Curling Club
met March 16 to select new
officers and committees for
the 1981-82 curling season.
:These positions will either
be accepted or other names
added and voted on at the
annual meeting on April 4,
None of the regular games
of mixed curling were can-
celled this winter due to
storms, so March 16 was a
bonus evening of curling.
Since the evening back in
February when all members
had a chance to skip was so
successful, this was again
tried and enjoyed, although
the feeling of competition
was less because this game
did not count for regular
curling. Some members were
absent but there were
enough present to have all
five sheets of ice in play for
both draws.
Usually sheet 1 is the best
ice in the arena but sheet 1
and also sheet 4 ice surfaces
left something tb be desired
this week. Hopefully there
will be better ice conditions
next season. However, ac-
cording to reports of some
curlers from other arena
curling clubs, the Brussels
arena ice surface is compar-
able to most arenas.

ing used sheets 2, 3, and 5 on

The students of Grey
Central School, Ethel, have
finished their three Wednes-
day'afternoons of electives.
16 students chose curling
as an elective. iTheir youth-
ful enthusiasm and eager-
ness to learn was a real treat.
Some of these kids will be the
future of our curling club in
Brussels.
Stewart SteiSs was in
charge of teaching them the
basics of curling. Bob and
Joyce Alexander and Jennet
Locking assisted. Stewart at
