ALL CHURCHES TOOK PART—A number of women from the different Brussels churches took part in the World Day of Prayer service which was held this year in the Melville Presbyterian Church. (Photo by Ranney) BY THE REV. CHARLES A. SWAN - DUFF'S UNITED CHURCH WALTON, ONTARIO On March 6 Christians around the world united their hearts in prayer, World Day of Prayer is a meaningful experience that has taken place for more than a half century. Christian churches and communities come to- gether on the first Friday in Lent to observe World Day of Prayer. By so doing, almost 200 countries shared this year's theme of "The Earth is the Lord's —. The service initially was prepared and written by native American Indian women who represent vari- ous tribes throughout the U.S. The observation has been Made that native Amer- icans were the original ecol- ogists, for they have. a reverence for the world of nature. This sense of sacred— ness for God's world quali- ties them without a doubt to teach the rest of the world how to live in harmony with the natural environment and each other. World Day of Prayer had its origins in the U.S. and Canada. Women in various denominations set aside a day of prayer for the work of home missions. Later, over- seas missions were included. These womens' groups were organized independently in the United States and Can- ada in 1887, 1895 and 1889. Then in 1919 both countries decided to hold interdenom- inational services, organized by Christian women, By 1927 the official name for the day was adopted. Each year the World Day of Prayer committee selects a different country to prepare a theme which they them- selves choose and the service is distributed around the world. For example, in 1979 the service was pi'epared by a group of women from Africa who met in Zambia. The service last year origi- nated in Thailand. An offering is received which is used to support all kinds of projects and worth- while causes on every conti- nent. These include aid to the aging and handicapped, support for children with no Families, all levels of educa- tion, emergency relief for needy areas and many more.
