AGRICULTURE
the
REAL ISSUE
IN HURON-BRUCE
Being a farmer, Gary Harron is aware of the
farmers' problems.
- Uncertain Markets
-High interest rates
-Foreign land speculation
-No incentive for young people
to farm
-Unfair import laws
Gary is not satisfied with government's
approach to the farmers' problems. With more
than 50% of jobs rerated to agriculture, the
farmer is entitled to more attention.

Howick group explains
How Red Cross spends your dollars
Correspondent
MRS. GEORGE BROWN

The Red Cross Converts
your Dollars into essential
services: 1) Blood Donor
Service - 9% - The Red Cross
is responsible for collecting
380,000 units of blood each
year in the Province of
Ontario, and distributes this
blood and its components,
free of charge, to hospitals
and medical institutions in
the province.
2) Water Safety 15% -
Public Education
programmes and instructor
courses, such as we have in
our township, teach 300,000
men, women and children to
be safe in and around water.
3) Red Cross Corps 3% •
This uniformed service
provides transportation to
senior citizens, the-
handicapped and others in
need. Detachments from this
corps also assist other
services when needed, such
as the disaster in Woodstock
in 1979.
4) Emergency Response
5% In the case of major or
minor disasters the Red
Cross's always ready to
respond. Especially was this
true during the fires in 1980
in Northern Ontario, when
the Red Cross of Winnipeg
directed the Airlift where
3,700 people, at the rate of
120 every 20 minutes, were
removed. Red Cross
"volunteers and staff, re-
gistered and bused evacuees
to the city's Civic Centre
where Red Cross arranged
accommodation.
Ten telephones were
manned at the Red Cross
centre 24 hours a day to
handle calls from all over the
U.S. and Canada asking
about relatives, 250 calls an
hour were handled at peak
periods.-
May 31, when 23 Hercules
Aircraft left Winnipeg, 18
paid staff and 285 volunteers
had worked „ approximately
2,285 hrs. in the crisis.
5) Tracing and Reunion
1 % - Red Cross locates and
reunites family members
separated through man -
made disasters and civil con-
flicts. More than 1,000
requests for assistance of
this nature were handled last
year. Run-away children are
one of the many helped.
6) Senior Services 2% -
Volunteers organize several
programs including Fitness
classes, telephone links, fri-
endly visiting and Meals on
Wheels.
7) Homemakers 7% - This
service helps keep a houe-
hold running smoothly when
the person normally in
charge is unable to do so.
8) Sickroom Equipment
Loan 7% - The equipment is
available in many Ont. Red
Cross Branch and Howick
Twp. is no exception. We
have a splendid loan service.
Wes. Ball is the
convenor and equipment is at
the Clerk's Office in Gorrie.
9) First Aid 4% - Courses
are offered to groups in the
township. Qualified
volunteers will give
instruction to students. Your
Red Cross in Howick also
supplies first aid kits.
10) Family Health 1% -
Red Cross teaches the basic
techniques to ensure healthy
family living.
11) Youth 8% - The Red
Cross volunteers encourage
students to participate in
Community and
International projects in
areas of health safety and
international affairs. In
Howick, our Junior Red
Cross looks after this.
12) Hospital visiting 2% -
Veterans, and those who are
in need or alone, are visited
by volunteers who provide
companionship and assis-
tance. One Red Crossman we
know takes his violin and
plays for senior men who are
shut-in, and also plays chess
twice a week with shut-ins.
13) Volunteer service 2% -
90 per cent of Red Cross
work is done by volunteers.
Thanks to them, because the
energy and time contributed
yearly by these volunteers,
the Provincial Red Cross is
able to offer its many
services at little or very low
cost. These men, women and
young people donate, every
year in Ontario, more than a
half million hours to these
services.
14) Assistance
International and Domestic
5% - Volunteers of all ages
make handicrafts which are
sold with proceeds going to
support the international
work of the Society.
15) Our International
Commitment 15% - The
Canadian Red Cross is only
one of the 126 national
societies which together
make up the League of Red
Cross Societies.
Our Allocation this year in
Howick is $1,000.00 Ontario
is pledged to raise $5 million.
Let us try to all give our best
this year.
Red Cross is people
helping people! Our last
canvas in Howick netted
some $800r $600 (approx.)
was spent right in Howick!
