With more than 50% of jobs rerated to agriculture, the farmer is entitled to more attention. GEORGE BROWN 335.3424 The Red Cross Converts your Dollars into essential services: 1) Blood Donor Service - 9% - The Red Cross is responsible for collecting 380,000 units of blood each year in the Province of Ontario, and distributes this blood and its components, free of charge, to hospitals and medical institutions in the province. 2) Water Safety 15% - Public Education programmes and instructor courses, such as we have in our township, teach 300,000 men, women and children to be safe in and around water. 3) Red Cross Corps 3% • This uniformed service provides transportation to senior citizens, the- handicapped and others in need. Detachments from this corps also assist other services when needed, such as the disaster in Woodstock in 1979. 4) Emergency Response 5% In the case of major or minor disasters the Red Cross's always ready to respond. Especially was this true during the fires in 1980 in Northern Ontario, when the Red Cross of Winnipeg directed the Airlift where 3,700 people, at the rate of 120 every 20 minutes, were removed. Red Cross "volunteers and staff, re- gistered and bused evacuees to the city's Civic Centre where Red Cross arranged accommodation. Ten telephones were manned at the Red Cross centre 24 hours a day to handle calls from all over the U.S. and Canada asking about relatives, 250 calls an hour were handled at peak periods.- May 31, when 23 Hercules Aircraft left Winnipeg, 18 paid staff and 285 volunteers had worked „ approximately 2,285 hrs. in the crisis. 5) Tracing and Reunion 1 % - Red Cross locates and reunites family members separated through man - made disasters and civil con- flicts. More than 1,000 requests for assistance of this nature were handled last year. Run-away children are one of the many helped. 6) Senior Services 2% - Volunteers organize several programs including Fitness classes, telephone links, fri- endly visiting and Meals on Wheels. 7) Homemakers 7% - This service helps keep a houe- hold running smoothly when the person normally in charge is unable to do so. 8) Sickroom Equipment Loan 7% - The equipment is available in many Ont. Red Cross Branch and Howick Twp. is no exception. We have a splendid loan service. Wes. Ball is the convenor and equipment is at the Clerk's Office in Gorrie. 9) First Aid 4% - Courses are offered to groups in the township. Qualified volunteers will give instruction to students. Your Red Cross in Howick also supplies first aid kits. 10) Family Health 1% - Red Cross teaches the basic techniques to ensure healthy family living. 11) Youth 8% - The Red Cross volunteers encourage students to participate in Community and International projects in areas of health safety and international affairs. In Howick, our Junior Red Cross looks after this. 12) Hospital visiting 2% - Veterans, and those who are in need or alone, are visited by volunteers who provide companionship and assis- tance. One Red Crossman we know takes his violin and plays for senior men who are shut-in, and also plays chess twice a week with shut-ins. 13) Volunteer service 2% - 90 per cent of Red Cross work is done by volunteers. Thanks to them, because the energy and time contributed yearly by these volunteers, the Provincial Red Cross is able to offer its many services at little or very low cost. These men, women and young people donate, every year in Ontario, more than a half million hours to these services. 14) Assistance International and Domestic 5% - Volunteers of all ages make handicrafts which are sold with proceeds going to support the international work of the Society. 15) Our International Commitment 15% - The Canadian Red Cross is only one of the 126 national societies which together make up the League of Red Cross Societies. Our Allocation this year in Howick is $1,000.00 Ontario is pledged to raise $5 million. Let us try to all give our best this year. Red Cross is people helping people! Our last canvas in Howick netted some $800r $600 (approx.) was spent right in Howick!
