HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Brussels Post, 1981-02-25, Page 3JACK PENNINGTON John A rnold (Jack) • Pennington of Brussels died Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Wing- ham and District Hospital in his 69th year. A retired farmer, he was a member of St. John's Church in Brussels. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary McLean, and three daugh- ters Beth (Mrs. Gerald McCauley), Bonnie (Mrs. Wayne Jacklin) both of Brus- sels and Marlene at home and one son John of Brus- sels. Also surviving are five grandchildren. He was pre- deceased by his parents and five brothers. The body was at the Brussels Chapel of the M.L. Watts Funeral Home until Friday, Feb. 13 when a removal was made to St. John's Anglican Church, Brussels for funeral services at 2 p.m. Rev. Keith Stokes of London officiated. This is what happened at the Majestic Women's Institute when members met for their February meeting in the Library. The meeting was under the convenership of Peggy Cudmore and Ruby Steiss. Several desserts were 'sam- pled with recipes available. Peggy Cudmore gave a dem- onstration on the making of a special dessert. Wilma Hem- ingway also explained how The Brussels Friendship Club met Wednesday after- noon in the Legion hall with a good attendance. Fred Thuell presided in the absence of president Frank. Hooper. Verna. Tho- mas played for "0 Canada." Minutes were read by secre- tary Doris Hooper. The lunch and social committees were named for the March meet- ing. Ed Martin read a letter in her dessert was made, A letter from Huronview requested that the Majestic Women's Institute look after the Birthday Party on March 18. Several members offered to make cupcakes. Wilma Hemingway, Dorothy Stef- fler and Doris McCall are to look after entertainment. The Officers Conference will be held at the University of Waterloo on May 5, 6 and 7, with Doris McCall to attend. The dues for the year 1981-82 will be increased to regard to having the drive- ways cleared for the elderly who are not able to remove this heavy snow after plow- ing. This was signed by the members and will be pre- sented to council for consid- eration. The treasurer's report was given by Laura Lucas. Mem- bers .were pleased to have three ladies from Atwood entertain. Marie Peachey gave two readings, also two readings were given by Jess- to follow. Nora Stephenson took a team to the Belmore Ladies' Bonspiel February 16. With Jack McDonald and Earl 'Dunn. Flower Bearers were Tom Miller and Tom Bernard. $3.00. In 1983, the A.C,W,W. Conference will be held in Vancouver, B.C, Ida Evans presented the Institute with an Institute Plate with the crest and motto "For H oibe and Country", which will be hung in the Library. The Institute will hold a Dessert Euchre on. March 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Base- ment. Everyone is welcome. It was decided that the annual meeting take the form of a Pot Luck Luncheon at the ie Lemmex, Eleanor Inglis favoured with several select- ions on the accoi.dian. A card was signed by the members for Mildred Mc- Taggart, 'a patient in Sea- forth hospital. There were seven tables playing euchre. Winners were: high lady - Annie 11.Ynne, high gent - Ed Martin; low lady - Mrs. Lemmex; low gent - Mel Jacklin; lucky card - Marie Burgess. her was. Betty McDonald as vice, Mary Ten Pas, second and Bonnie Taylor, lead. They had three good games and brought 'thine third prize. Rosemary Wheeler also skipped a team at this bonspiel which was good experience. While Nora was away in Belfnore, her team in the Ladies After- noon Curling in Brussels tied Joyce Alexander's team. Sharon Cowman and Yvonne Knight also tied. Karen Uhler won her game. Prizes for the January draw were given out, follow- ing the afternoon curling. Nora Stephenson's team won first prize with 491/2 points. Her vice was Darlene Old- field, second, Marg Dillow and lead, Jean Bridge. Karen Uhler's team won second prize with 461/2 points. Her vice was Velma Locking, second, Jean Veitch and lead, Trish Clarkson. Fran Bremner's team stra- tegy brought in third prize with 34% points. Her vice was Jennet Locking, second, Maria Van Keulen and lead, Hennie Terpstra. Library this year. Isabel Adams reported on the Crewel Embroidery course and said the Summary Day will be held March 30 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Wingham, from 7 to 10 p.m. Doris McCall report- ed on a District Executive meeting held at Marjorie Humphries, Walton. The District Executive meeting District Annual will be held May 12 at Bluevale. Dinner tickets are available from Doris now. On October 22 and 23, the (Area Convention will be held in Brussels, the theme being -I Need You','. Since the convention lasts two days, billeting will be necessary. A demonstration on "Parties" will be held March 17 at St. Andrews Presbyter- ian Church, Wingham, at 7:30 p.m. Lessons on "Making Pants " will begin March 3 at Wingham Pres-. byterian Church. Everyone sang "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" with Lulu Kerr at the piano. 'The Roll Call, "Name the school you attended and what it is used for tody" was well answered. The Motto, "It isn't the things we know, it is the will to serve, the hand to lend, and the light our lan- tern shows" was well pre- pared and presented by Peg- gy Cudmore. A card was signed for Mrs. Mary Blake, currently in the Brussels Nursing Home. Ruby Steiss brought a few laughts with her "Smiles." There will, be a Secret Auction at the next meeting, March 11 at 2 p.m. Also- a Microwave _Demonstration. Don't miss it! People we know Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Perrie, Verna and Heather visited with Rev. and Mrs. James Perrie and family in Shake- speared and attended church there. Cranbrook The Cranbrook Hall Board are sponsoring a progressive euchre on Friday night, Feb. 27 in the Community Centre. The Foresters are plan- ning another euchre on March 6th. Although living just 5 miles outside the riding Gary is a lifetime resident of Bruce County and is committed to moving into the riding when elected. Being a farmer Gary is very aware of the problems facing Agriculture today. Problems, such as high interest rates, low prices and foreign speculation in area farmland. Gary has been involved in municipal politics for the past 121/2 years including terms as warden of Bruce County and chairman of the Bruce County Economic Development Committee. This experience has acquainted Gary with both the problems and potential of Huron Bruce.
