UCW hears
The February meeting
of the afternoon unit of the
U.C.W. was held at the home
of Mrs. Don Vair.
Mrs. Cecil Coultes opened
the meeting. To continue the
worship service she asked,
"Who are Evangelicals?"
and why has the recent
Observer published about 20
pages, on evangelism? The
answer is because the church
is being criticized as not
meeting the spiritual needs
and growth of its members.
A quote from Hugh Mc
Callum says "The church has
two basic missions, it has a
responsibility to sound the
gospel to bring people to
Christialso a responsibility to,
minister to people's physical
needs, but the Gospel must
come first."
NORANDA IN CHILE
The study by Mrs. Law-
rence Taylor took us .to
troubled Chile where. public
meetings are outlawed un-
less the police give permis-
sion. When Allende's gov-
ernment collapsed six years
'ago a military junta was
placed in firm control.
Military gear offers an
easy way to control crowds
and has taken away the
workers' rights to organize.
With junta control the situa-
tion has worsened-all pros-
perity is gone, doctors are
out of work, nurses are
unemployed, family life is
threatened and the illiteracy
rate is climbing.
That same government has
become a partner in develop-
ment deals with big Canad-
ian companies like Noranda
mines. The churches are
urging the company to refuse
to gain its profits at the
expense of the life and
liberty of the country's citi-
zens. As a responsible corp-
'orate citizen that should be
the least Noranda can do.
BIBLE QUIZ
A Bible quiz on Women
of the Bible was conducted
by Mrs. Earl Anderson. For
our Bible study, Mrs. Ander-
son chose for her topic
"Tolerance." Every man has
the right to his own thoughts,
-she said and to think things
out until he comes to his own
beliefs. "We must all con-
cede the right to a man to do
his own speaking."
"Always remember we
may hate a man's beliefs but
we must never hate the
man," she said. "We may
wish to eliminate what he
teaches but we must never
wish to eliminate him."
Mrs. Cecil Coultes will be
social convenor for the year.
The World Day of Prayer will
be held in the Presbyterian
church on March 6th at 2
o'clock. Mrs. Anderson
thanked Mrs. V air for her
home.
