Stabiliz- ation Board has paid out about $26 million so far under the 1979-80 federal hog stabilization program announced last May. About two-thirds of the 25,000 claims submitted by hog producers in Canada now have been processed. Claims are being processed in the order received. The Board expects total payments to be about $46 million. Incomplete or incor- rectly completed forms and other administrative prob- lems have caused delays in payments, says Archie Grat- ton, head of operations and planning for Canada's Agri- cultural Stabilization Board. Follow-up phone calls or letters to obtain more in- formation have been neces- sary in many cases. Mr. Gratton stresses that "proof of sale" documents and carcass weights of the hogs must accompany claim. The stabilization payment of $2.46 per hundredweight applies to market hogs sold between April 1st, 1979 and March 31st, 1980. The pay- ment is being made on a maximum of 5,000 hogs per farmer, but the average Can- adian hog producer sold less than 200 hogs in 1979-1980. The average carcass weight was about 165 pounds, mak- ing the average stabilization, payment per hog about $4.00 Application forms are still available from the Agricul- tural Office, Clinton. MS. One of the prime object- ives of the Ontario Genealog- ical Society and its recently formed Huron County branch, is the acquisition and preservation of the informa- tion recorded on the tomb- stones in the area. The branch has found that there are 101 known ceme- teries in the county. Alison Lobb of Clinton who is co-ordinating a cemetery project said that there will be a lot of work involved in transribing all of these. "We are hoping for assist- ance of any interested indi- viduals - whether they be- long to a genealogical or historical society or not," she stressed. Mrs. Lobb explained that there is a great deal of preliminary work to be done in the cemetery transcript- ions and the group needs assistance here too. "Although we do h ave a list of the known cemeteries giving the lot and conces- sion, we also need to know the common names for the burying grounds, plus their approximate size and condi- tion, to help us in estimating the amount of time required to do the leg work," Mrs. Lobb explained. The geneologists arc also looking for the names, addresses and telephone numbers of anyone who might have existing records on the various cemeteries, or who perhaps have done sonic work in that cemetery for their own family history. Although a major part of the transcription work will be done in the larger, known cemeteries, the group feels that an equally important job for the genealogist is the recording of the often un- marked burying grounds. Mrs. Lobb said that it was quite common years ago for pioneers to bury family mem- bers at some site on the home farm. Often these family members were chil- dren, and, equally often, markers were not available. Over the years, even if tombstones were used, these graves have been neglected and their sites are now known only to a few. "Our objective is to identi- fy as many of these burying grounds as possible. First we need to know where they are by lot and concession, plus any identifying marks such as a clump of trees, or by a river bank, which might help one locate the spot. Then we hope to find out how many graves there are in the location, the approximate 11 Articles for Sale date of burial, and names and ages of the individuals interred there," she said. Workers on the transcript- ion project are hoping that many people will speak to the older residents of the county in an attempt to identify some of the older sacred locations for the genealogical society. "These pioneer cemeter- ies are an important part of our Huron County heritage," Mrs. Lobb stressed. Anyone who has informa- tion on the Huron County cemeteries and pioneer bury- ing grounds is asked to contact Mrs. Donald Lobb.
