109TH YEAR - ISSUE NO. 4 PRICE: 30 Cents
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1981
BRUSSELS
ONTARIO
Rain is more of a tradition at the Brussels
fair than some of the events, and because of
this the fair might be moving to a new
locatioh.
At the annual meeting of the Brussels
Agricultural Society on Wednesay night,
president Jack Cardiff noted that it seemed
as though it rained every second year of the
Brussels fair and that because of this there
had been talk of moving the location to near
the Brussels arena.
He said there would be more room for
displays and moreroom for people if it was
raining than there is in the Crystal Palace.
He told the members of the Agricultural
Society that they could buy some lots from
Jack Bryans up near the arena, but in order
to get the money for that they would have to
sell some of the lots they own. He said
they also found out that the village of
Brussels and Morris Township owns some of
the fairground land. He also noted that the
new site which would be south of the arena
and extend as far as Graham's Survey
would not be large enough for a race track so
that they would have to buy even more land.
One 'of the stipulations of Mr. Bryans
agreeing to his land is that there must be a
race track.
Mr. Cardiff said that no matter whether
the fair stayed in its present location or
moved up near the arena, in order to have
some place for the midway and the parking
of vehicles, there would have to be some
topsoil taken off and some gravel put in so
there would be better drainage.
He said he was just bringing these things
up for information and if the fair board did
decide to go ahead with it, there would have
to be a vote on it.
Jim Mair, anAgricultural Society member
said he thought the idea would be worth
looking into. "I've always felt the Palace was
. overcrowded and I think you could, have a
better display if you had more room," he
said.
One member wanted to know whether,
they would undertake to have the calve
barns moved, up near the arena location.
"All these things will have to be thought
about, talked about and chewed about," Mr.
Cardiff said.

The letter received last month from a
reader was appreciated. It is always pleasing
to be assured that people actually read this
column and enjoy it.

Spring cannot be far off. Even the robins,
our bright harbingers of spring seem to feel
that way. Joan and Howard Bernard of
Brussels caught sight of a robin on Sunday at
their cottage on the 6th line of M'or ris where
they provide feed for birds. It was not
shivering and dopey with cold when they
spotted it but perky and ch irping as it
perched on an apple tree while feeding.

Folks who trot around in the cold and
frosty days of winter without a head covering
are making a mistake. The Ministry of
Agriculture and Food informs us ,that a
major percentage of the body's heat is lost
through yotit head, so always wear a hat.
Take that advice and remember to conserve
body energy when the cold winter winds to
do blow.

A letter from an Ottawa resident stated
how pleased, and proud, he was to see on
Fs the front page of the Sport Section of the
k. Ottawa Citizen that Carol 'Wheeler, a young
lady from his home town of Brussels, with
her partner, Michael Kashilka, had been
awarded the Silver Medal for Junior Pair at
the Eastern Divisional Champions hips held
in Ottawa. They went on to say these yOung
people deserve tremendous credit for doing
So well and added just remember that at
that level they are only a few levels 'away
from World or Olympic standards. How right
he is! Congratulations also to Kevin Wheeler
and his partner Christine Hough of
Kitchener who won the cold Medal, at
Central Division Championships at Winoi-
peg.

City folk ask "What is there to do in a
place as small as Brussels?" If you are spry
enough, have the energy and care to become
involved, there is more than enough to do,
even in the winter weather we have had.
There is curling (men's, ladies', mixed, and
junior), hockey, ringette, skating, figure
skating, tobogganing and snowmobiling. For
those not up to such activities there is the
Senior Citizens Club; church, lodge, W.I.
and Horticultural Society activities; instruc-
tion in crafts available, 4-H clubs, Guides,
Brownies, Cubs, The Lions, Optimists
Legion and Recreation Committee sponsor
special events. If you still have leisure time
hanging heavy on your hands shut-ins would
welcome a visit or you could become a
Nursing Home Volunteer. There is an
excellent library where you can find books to
improve your knowledge on any number of
subjects or simply amuse and entertain you,
Yes, there is plenty to do here if you have
will to get going,

Do not let this happen to you. Here is an
item noticed in Safety Newsbriefs. Upon
completing a driving test a Sherman ; Texas;
driver was parking in front of the license
bureau, A foot hit the wrong pedal...and the
car shot through the but eau's front door,
ploughed through partitions and offices, and
left a clerk with a broken foot." Do you
suppose that driver was issued a license that
day?

It Seems I was not the only one with a cat
problem. My next door neighbours had the
same trouble. Their situation Was more
complicated. It was not a simple case of
chasing them Out or catching them to drop
them outside. As there is no basement under
that house there was no way to get at them in
the limited space. At least one cat enjoyed
itself frolicking around the heat and water
pipes creating suite weird sound effectS,
before it decided, after a couple of days, to
go home and crawled out the way it had
