I groups it is not necessary to
have the fullslate of officers.
All we really need is a
president, secretary and
treasurer.
We need variety in our
meetings, ,we need to get
people involved, it is better
to have group discussions
than to always listen to a
length); topic by one person.
W.M.S. does not have to be
boring, its purpose is to unite
the women, girls, and
children in the work of
missions. She conducted a
true or: false quiz on what to
do in our meetings, and, to
help us think about our work
as a group. This proved to be
a most interesting meeting
as, well as well as thought
provoking. Mrs. 'Jack Knight

, The meeting 'was , turned

Armstrong who conducted

shared articles on farming
and Canadian industries.
' Many subjects were
discussed, the production of
bull meat versus steer meat;
. Canadian made wicker ! • mallets, hog prbduption,
horse meat as a growing
industry; paying of spouses
for farm work; recycling
manure, a newly, designed
Bauer skate produped in
Kitchener to be on the
market in February for
approximately S200. per
pair, the alarming fact that
Canada imports 35-40% of
it s food, the desire for large
eggs resulting in producers
often feeding 22% protein
when hens actually require
only 1,5%; , also the need
for hormones to increase
production., 0.FA.
convention; how the Bruce
nuclear may bp utilized for
heating greenhouses, , sprays
used on crops, some pros and
cons; the production, of
newsprint at Corner Brook in
Newfoundland, ,it takes 1 1/4
cords of pulpwood to make 1
ton, newsprint„ and one
edition of the Toronto Times
requires ,4 acres of trees; the
production of skim milk,
cheese, made from whey
being done at, Guelph using
acid instead of, rennet and
the importance of its use in
underdeveloped countries
because of its digestibility;
mention was also made of
Russell Bolton who at 79 is a
nine time winner for his hay
at the Royal Winter Fair.
Mrs. Armstrong then gave a
short history on three local
industries. The first was
Niagara Chemicals which
was, bought by Rycold of
Toronto in 1977. It supplies
sprays and equpment to all
areas in Canada.
The second was the "Big
0" which began in Hensel
in 1968 and has expanded
four times. It now has four
lines operating, producing
plastic drainage tile in
diameters from 3" to 12".
They now have plants in
Quebec, Comber and Alberta
with plans for future
expansion. They own a clay
tile plant in Dresden and also
own tiling equipment outlets.
In 1977 they opened their
head office in Exeter.
Dashwood Industries was
begun in 1931 by Mr.
Thomas S. Clump. In 1939,
'the plant was, destroyed by
Aire but was soon rebuilt. The
. steam engine and boiler for
this plant came from_
Brussels. The war helped the
company and soon a decision
had to be made whether to
manufacture windows or
kitchen cabinets. It was
decided to produce windows
and the company is now
Canada wide. ,
Mrs. Armstrong then
demonstrated how to make a
pin cushion, which was
pretty, useful, and easy to
make.,
Everyonethen had an
opportunityp to win an article
from the penny table. These
were all Canadian-made
articles. Lunch, was
served by the committee in
charge, Mrs. C. Mathers,
Mrs. Robt. McMurray and
Mrs. Wm. de Vos, and a
social time was enjoyed.
