We are entering the doorway of a New Year. What are we goiiig to do with it? Will we be able to look back at the close of 1981 and say we made it a good year, that we are better persOns, have lived better than before. We can if we becomeless self-centred; strertch out a helping hand to those who need it; meet strangers with a welcoming smile; consider others before ourselv,es; cleanse ourselves of all prejudice, envy and malic- ious gossip. Most of all we need a warm, close relationship, devoid of selfish demands and expectations, with family and friends. Cease the struggle for mere material things, be satisfied with what we can afford and make the best of what we have. Luxuries do not guarantee happiness. Where there is love, understanding and contentment there is a happy family. We can, if we make . an honest effort, make a better year for ourselves and those close to us. ****** Skidding is common on icy roads. Don't panic, warns the Ontario Safety League , and don't brake. Take your foot off the gas and steer in the direction of the skid. Don't over-correct, Be prepared for a second skid in the opposite direction. After all the publicity and continued uproar about Western Separatism it was encouraging to read an editorial front Ithe Calgary Herald. In it Alberta was told to _pause and think as bit about important things before, in anger and frustration, they talked of separatism. "Canada (the writer went on in part) with all its divisions, is still one of the world's most noble dreams. It hai" richness of human spirit, a Challenge, a frontier that wise men and women simply cannot lightly cast aside. There is cause for anger, just grievance, yet it would be the height of folly to allow it to propel- us unthinkingly in a course of action, or even proposals, that. 'would seriously damage our country and this part of it we hold dear. Canadians elsewhere look on with growing incredulity as the province that is now most prosperous, and that has the most glowing future of them all, harbours without counter argument the exhortations of those who would wrench themselves and their energy Profits away from Canadian federation in what must be one . of the most negative political proposals this continent has ever seen. Outraged as we may be, we must ask ourselves whether one basic economic argument, no matter how deep and devisive, justifies a reciprocal attack on the very foundations of Canadian nationhood. The plain answer is that it does not." „The forgoing in only a small part of what the editorial writer had to say. It clearly demonstrates that there are some sane clear-headed Albertans who actively oppose separatism. May their advise be heeded and the money hungry oil moguls not allowed to lead their province into separatism. ****** In spite of the fact that my dog and I were, alone for Christmas Day the holiday season was a happy time for me. My Winnipeg, family were with me for two days before Christmas. The Ottawa folks arrived on Boxing Day and spent several days with tire, before having to return home. A Kapp Christmas time to me means having my family around me. Youngsters and yoting people make it a merry Christmas with fun and laughter chasing away the hovering thoughts of other years when dear Ones now missing were with us. How lonely Christmas tittle must be for those who have no family With them and only memories to keep them company.
