Twenty-six Howick area
girls, are better baby sitters
as a result of a course
recently concluded ' there.
The eight week course
offered by the Howick Jr.
Women's Institute schooled
the girls , in the . care and
safety of their yOung
charges, including how to
handle emergencies.
The Junior VV.I, members
ran the course, bringing in
resource persons to help with
specific topics. Areas
covered included child care/
including how to change
diapers, and safety and
behaviour problems, fire
safety, first aid resources
and how to handle mentally
retarded children.
Joanne Stoltz was in
charge of the course, while
other Jr. W.I members
involved included Pauline
Alton, Connie. Fenton, Helen
Ruttan a registered nurse,
Darlene Harding, Joyce
Lockie, Catherine Stewart,
Margaret • Greig and
Henrietta Claus.
RESOURCES
Resource persons included
Connie Kucs, a public health
nurse; Dawn Dobell; Dave
Crothers and Lyn Hickey, of
the Wingham Fire Depart-
ment, Eleanor Ward, Harvey
Haveman of St. John
Ambulance and Mary -Lou
Ruttan.
This is the first time the
baby sitting course has been
offered, Mrs. Stoltz reported
and she said the Jr. W..I.
plans to repeat it, although
they aren't sure yet just
when. She said there was •a
very positive response to the
course and nearly all the girls
made it to each session.
EIGHT WEEKS
The course lasted for eight
weeks and then the girls
Mrs. Alex Taylor and Mrs.
A.L. Stephens conducted the
worship period when the
Gorrie United Church
Women met for ;their
Christmas meeting. An
impressive Candle lighting
ceremony was held, and
familiar carols were sung.
Mrs. Taylor explained the
country of origin of the carols
and Mrs. Robt. Strong sang
the Huron'Carol, Canadian in
origin. Mrs. Sheldon Marion
acted as pianist.
The business periOd was in
charge of the President - Mrs
Robert Strong, Mrs. Lloyd
Jacques gave the financial
report, showing gratifying
returns from the fowl supper
and bazaar. The highlight of
the ' evening was the "In-
stallation of Officers for
1981. Mrs. Bruce Robertson
presented the report of the
nominating committee, and
the past president Mrs. Bill
Nay installed the new
officers. Past President -

wrote an examination on
what they had studied, with a
minium passing grade of ZiO
per cent she said. The
sessions were held in the.
Howick Central School. The
top five girls at. Howick were
Jackie Burns; Ria Boonstra;
Mary-Ann Van Den Braak;
Sandra . Gedcke; and Fiona
Mueller. Also receiving their
"certificates were Peggy

The Gorrie United Church
Sunday School Christmas
Party was held in the Sunday
• School room on Wednesday
evening Dec. 17 at 7 p.m..
with approximately 40
attending.
Mrs. Melville Greig
showed two films "The First
Christmas" and 'Clem the
Clumsy Camel': The children
sane "Christ for Me" and
"Jo \ Bells" accompanied on
the piano by Kendra
Robertson.
On December 17th the
Gorrie Womcn's InStitute
and guests, enjoyed a buffet
pot luck luncheon at noon in
the Gorrie Town Hall.
Mrs. Graham chaired a
short busines meeting. As
the Roll Call was called each
' membei introduced her
guest or guests, and gave a
thought on Christmas. The
treasurer Mrs. Robert
Gibson reported on the most
successful catering project
done when the Institute
provided the Christmas
evening dinner on Dec: 5th
for the Wroxeter Parks

Manger", "O Christmas
Tree" and "Jingle Bells".

refreshments and treats
enjoyed under the

Institute provide a bright
decoration in the village.

Mundell and Mrs. Jack.
Ferguson with Mrs. Wilbur
Hogg at the piano were
enjoyed and guests and
members each received a gift
from the lighted Christmas
tree.
