STOCKYARDS Brussels it 14 THE BRUSSELS POST, DECEMBER 24„; 1980. .• M adill • Henrietta Oldengarm 13B Hark; far--off bells are ringing; outside, a snowfall, silent as a feather, falls; next door, the sounds of a pump organ strains the air; and from the den come gales of children's happy laughter. Twinkling in the corner stands a spiny tree competing with the flickering of the fat red candle on the window sill. Lying about are various tempting dishes of candy bars, and dates. You sit back, relaxed, smoking a cigar if you're a grandfather, a cigarette if you're a young man. Knitting needles dick from the women's fingers; new and exciting toys delight and intrigue the kids. "Peace on earth and mercy mild," chimes a far off record, and, you see the beauty in Christmas. You feel you have grasped the real meaning of the Yuletide season, and you feel good But the next day dawns with the piercing screams of the alarm a clock at 5:58 a.m. and you have to shovel your walk to get your car out. you must contend, with Junior's disappointed cries when his Superman) 411 refuses to walk. You realize the monstrous tree has to be taken down. And then those new hot bills in the mailbox have to be faced. Where has this tranquility fled to so silently? Why can those peaceful moments and feelings not be cap. ,tuned in a silver box to reopen and use every day? The season has gone and now stretches another eleven or twelve months' before this peaceful feeling floods your soul once. More. Well then, is this all there is to Christmas? A rise and a fall of emotions? Surely not. This contentment or good- will on the materialistic level lasts no longer than a flickering candle: the wind passes over it and the light is gone. Physical ease and comfort, the absence of worry and calamity lulls us into a temporary sleep. But soon the alarm clock rings and our peace is shattered. How then can this year- round— peace rest in our bosoms? One word sufficieritly says it: re- conciliation. Listen for the next strains in that carol mentioned earlier: "Peace on earth, and mercy mild, Gold and sinners. reconciled.' If the angel's message of long ago causes us to welcome the Babe and His love into our lives, thereby reconcilling ourselves to God, the miracle • of Bethlehem is repeated. Stars will shine; shepherds will come to wonder; angels will sing every day of the year; and people will watch with wonder at the glad year-long change in you. God's 'love will shine brighter than the highest star on the tree, longer than the light of the tallest candle, and with more strength than all . the, reflections of the whole Scene. And when the drooping tinsel and shedding needles of the tree announce the end, we shall not flip the calendar's bright page with a sigh, but with gladness for the season of love has just, begun.
