Christmas Greetings to all my readers.
May you have 'the gladness of Christmas
which is Hope, the spirit of Christmas which
is. Peace, the heart of Christmas which is
Love..
Give thought to the lonely ones. Those
who have no family or close friends to share
the joys of this season with find Christmas
depressing, a dreary day of sadness. A visit
from someone, even a cheery telephone call,
to let them know there are people who are
thinking of them, will brighten their hours of
loneliness.

THE LEGEND OF THE HOLLY
The red holly berry which we now know
Was once as white as the new fallen' snow
And bloomed on its tree by the old stable
there
Where the Christ Child was cradled, so soft
and so fair.,.
And the Villagers came from miles around
To offer their gifts as they knelt to the
ground
Except for one child who had only a. limb
Of white holly berries that he carried with
him
So he offered it humbly to the new-born
Who pricked His small finger upon a sharp
thorn
And his blood remained there on one • shiny
leaf
The holly branch bowed while its heart filled
with grief
For it saw in a vision in years soon to be
A crown of thorns from a small holly tree
And so in its sorrow, it's grief and its shame
The white holly berries blushed redder than
flame
But Mary, the Mother, said, "Do not be
sad
You are the innocent, Rejoice and be glad,
FOr as you weep in pity at what men will do
God sends forgiveness and blessings to
you.' '
And in that short moment the red berries
shone
And so, that's how holly has come to be
known
As the symbol of Christmas and Christ's
holy birth.
And the symbol of cheer to all nien on earth.

Easy does it when it comes to winter
driving, comments the Ontario Safety
League. Allow extra time for every trip. On
snow and ice use the gentle touch on the
accelerator, steering wheel and brake.
Maintain a longer following distance. In an
emergency you're going to need much more
room to stop.

We are all aware of the three wise men
who travelled far to present their 'ifferings of
gold, frankincense . and myrr i to the
new-born king-the Babe of Bethlehem. But
Henry Van Dyke has told us of another wise
man. Here in a condensed version is the
STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN.
There was another Magi, Artaban,
companion of . the three wise men. He too
was watching for the brightness in the
heavens that would proclaim the coming of a
King of Israel and was prepared for the
journey. He had bought gifts - a sapphire, a
ruby and a pearl-to carry them as a tribute to
the King. He left to join his three friends on
their pilgrimage.
He was delayed when he came upon a
poor man. Hebrew exile and ministered to
him. The man told him the Messiah would
be born in Bethlehem.'His friends had gone
without him.
He sold the sapphire to buy camels and
provisions to continue his journey alone. In a
village he came upon a soldier of Her od who
was killing babies. Artaban gave him the
ruby to persuade' him not to enter the house
where a mother, who had been kind to him,
was with her baby.
He travelled ceaselessly. Thirty-three
years of his life had passed as his search led
him over land and sea. He came at last to
Damascus where there was a great crowd.
When he asked where everyone was going
he was told they were on their way to
Golgotha where two robbers and a man
called Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jesus,
were to crucified. He followed the multitude
toward (;o1 ;otha. On the way he saw soldiers
dragging a girl who begged him for help.
She had been seized to be sold as a slave to
F ay her dead father's debts. He gave his
pearl to the girl to pay her ransom.
Artaban was seriously injured when struck
on the head by a falling tile.
He was near death when a small voice like
music came faintly from far away.
His journey was ended. His treasures
were accepted. The Other Wise Man had
found the King,

We all make mistakes. A recent Globe
and Mail recipe which should have said 4 to
8 ounces of sherry did not. Their correction
next morning explained that they really
didn't mean to 48 ounces of sherry. If you
by any chance followed that recipe in some
of your Christmas baking, before the
correction appeared, you may have a Very
Merry Christmas.
