The business has moved across the street to what was formerly a storage building for their business. The building was once the White Star bakery, but Bill Stephenson ihas rented it for the last 15 years. Wayne Todd' of Tilsonburg is to have a bake shop in the former grocery store. Short Shots is on the editorial page this week. pis BY DEBBIE 'RANNEY Councillors were reappointed to various committees for , the 1981 season when Brussels council 'held its inaugural meeting Monday night. Following a swearing, in ceremony. Rev. Ken Innes of the Melville Presbyterian Church said ,there would be many ditl fi 'cult decisions to be made in the next two, years and he hoped council would have the longsightedness to deal, with these decisions. • APp,pinted to, the roads committee were chairman Hank yen Pas and Gordon Workman. Gordon Workman as chairman and Betty Graber were appointed to the recreati on committee. Mrs. Graber was appointed chairman of the property com- . mittee and Malcolm Jacobs is the other . representative. Mr. Jacobs was appointed chairman of the fire committee and Mr. Ten Pas was appointed as the other re- presentative. Reeve Cal Krauter is an ex-officio member of all committees. Brussels council received a' letter from the Wingham and District hospital in regard to the $500,000 building and renovations project that is going on there. The letter indicated that since four per cent of the patients come from Brussels, that they would like the municipality to give a donation of $4,000. Council decided to get more information on what other municipalities are doing. Council decided to give a donation of $350 to the. Wingham and'District Association for the Mentally Retarded after ;receiving a request from 'the Association for that lamount. Council received a letter from Wayne Lowe, indicating that he would be resigning as chairman of the Brussels recreation board as of January 1, 1981. He has served on the recreation board for eight years. Following lengthy discussion on Mr. Lowe's resignation and some of the problems at the arena, council decided to call -a meeting with -the Morris and. Grey Councils on Friday, December :12 to re-evaluate the financing of the arena. Building permits were approved for P. and K. Elliott and Muriel Garniss,, but one for G.W. The reeve's salarywas increased from $1100 to $1185; the deputy-reeve's from $950 to $1025 and councillors salaries go from $900 to $975. FOr attending special meetings, the reeve's rate was increased from $20 16 $25, and the ratelor councillors was increased from $15 to $20 per meeting. Each councillor is allowed one convention per year plus ,registration, plus hotel, plus mileage, plus $35. . Waste disposal site attendent Adam Smith's wage was 'raised from-$4.75 to $5.25' per hour as were the wages for general labour. Clerk-treasurer Nancy Michie re- ceived an increase in salary from $4.70 to $5.75 per hour plus the $45 rent she has been receiving and mileage of 25 cents per mile. In other business, council passed four BY DEBBIE RANNEY Although the prospect of getting some work done on the Brussels dam in the near future looked hopeful last year, there have been some delays according, to a report presented at the Maitland , Valley Conservation Authority's general meeting held on Wednesday. According to that report the regional office of the Ministry of Natural Resources is. wit holding approval of proposals for the Brussels Dam pre-engineering study pending the receipt of further information amending by-laws for the Nichol Drain, the Smith Drain, the Kirkby Municipal Drain and the Kelly Drain. Council discussed the opening of Martin's-bridge which is to take place on December 15. In a letter fromthe Wingham and District Hospital on the building and renovations project at the hospital, council learned that the total cost of the project was $500,000 and that since approximately 8 per cent of the patients were represented by Morris, the hospital was requesting a donation of $8,000 from the municipality. The clerk was to write that when the township budget is made up the request will be considered. Following a request from the Wingham and District Association for the Mentally Retarded for-$350 from each municipalty in order to keep their various schools going, council decided to give a donation of $200. A total of $850.95 in tax. rebates were approved by the township to 'pay as taxes are received by the township. Morris had a request from ratepayer to from the engineering consultants. At the Brussels Conservation Area this year a catwalk was installed across the headrace of the dam and dead and fallen trees were removed from the flood plain area below the dam; parking barriers were painted. The Brussels Dam Preliminary Engineering study cost $3,000 in 1980 and that was also the 1981 estimated figure.
