Going home from school
one day; I caught sight of an
old woman, bent and fragile.
The jaded'wrinkles 'around
het eyes crinkled as she
squinted to watch as we
passed. She had an ex-
pression On her face which I
mistook as wanting.
I felt uneasy, perhaps
because of what was inevit-
able, that one day I too would
be the wrinkled person
clutching a shopping bag
standing on the corner
watching a bus load of young
people passing.
But what did I have to
worry about? I am only 18. I
had years to go before I
became `old'! Yet it was just
last week that I realiied I was
in my final year of high
school. I was one of the big
kids, the wise and older kids.
"Older"! - The thought
made me think of the woman
again and things we didn't
have in common became
clearly reversible. We
couldn't have been more
alike.
It seemed like only yester-
day that I had started grade
nine and now here I was in
grade thirteen. Where had
all the time gone? Was there
more I could have' ac-
complished? Had I used
those five years the best way
I could?
Similar questions must
have haunted the woman on
the corner as she looked back
on her life. The strongest tie
between the woman and me
was the realization of the
time, precious time life had
given us. Because of our
youth, we had both passed it

off as a minor detail,
I felt I had to warn my
younger counterparts to -use
their time the best way they
could, that they did have a
chance to make their high

I knew though that had I
been the first year student I
would have laughed at the
person trying to convince me
of the same thing.
