Figures published recently in Macleans
magaine, however, lead to some interesting
questions about the whole medicare systcsm
in Canada. The figures lead some creeence
to doctors complaints in Ontario. For an
ordinary office visit, for instance, OHIP pays
a doctor $8.30 in Ontario. Only Quebec
doctors are paid less. In British Columbia
the doctor gets $12.50. In Alberta is is $9.70.
In nearly all other areas Ontario doctors are
near the bottom of the pay scale.
And yet to listen to the Ontario govern-
ment you'd think that we in Ontario were
wastrels with our health money. The
government has been on a cutback program
for years now. Remember the battle to close
down many of our hospitals? Remember the
fights hospitals that did stay open had to get
enough funding to keep from crippling the
services they offered?
Surely then we must be getting some
pretty 1( w cost service in terms of the fees
we pay to OHIP compared to other
provinces. But the figures say no. The
premium for a family in Ontario is $480 a
year. Compare the : 3 Alberta where the cost
is only $207 a year and you begin to wonder
just what's going on here. The Ontario
government likes to feel the high fee OHIP
charges is a deterrent but 1 look at the $480
my family pays and I start saying I'm not
getting my money's worth unless somebody
visits the doctor nearly 60 times a year.
I don't know about you but I'd like to know
just what is happening in Ontario when
others can pay less and yet the doctors can
be paid more.
