Holland continues to expressits thanks to
Canada for its part in the liberation in 1945.
Brussels is one of the, recipients of that
gratitude.
Recently a box of 1000 orange-red tulip
bulbs arrived at the municipal building for
the Royal Canadian Legion here. Tulip bulbs
were to be sent to every Legion in Canada as
a sort of Thank You gift to the Canadian
Armed Forces for their part in the Liberation
of Holland. These were to be sent after some
of Canada's veterans attended the 35th,
anniversary in May of Holland's Liberation
in the Second World War and signed their
names on a guest list. ,
Attending the ceremonies from this area
were: , Bill and Isabel Elston of Morris
TuwnShiP, Walter (Watt). and Jean Bewley
of R.R. 1, Walton, Bruce Smith.of 'Myth, Mr.
and Mrs. William Harris of Wingham, Mr."
and/ Mrs. Eldon Mann of Lucknow and a
furiner Gonie resident, Harold. Townsend,
now of Shelbourrie.
The box of tulip bulbs was sent along with
. a Charter 'printed in. Dutch, English and
French which expressed thankfulness for the
liberation of the Netherlands.
At the top of the charter is a picture of a ''
Canadian soldier with the words, 'Thank you
Canada, Merci" and Holland; 1945-1980
printed underneath. At the bottom of the
charter it quotes, "Gratitude is the remem-
bering from the heart."

CKNX radio has-been providing enter-
tainment to Wingharn and surrounding
area fpr many years now and 42 years age,
Sarah Stephenson of Brus;els became part
of that station's history.,
The 'former' Sarah Cruickshank, a
cousin of the late W.T. (Doc.) Cruickshank
(her father and his were brothers) the
pioneer and founding fathei of the CKNX
radio station, Sarah became known to
many as "Little Sarah".
Little Sarah was 15 years old when she
Was so` named: after she and a nephew
asked Doc Cruickshank if they could sing
for 15 minutes in' place of some of the
records on a country music show. He said
yes. Later she appeared on the CKNX Barn
Dance program with people like Rossic
Mann, Cactus Mac and the Jackson
Orchestra, Freda Jordan, Orton Graham
and Clark and Maitland Johnston.
The Barn dance started in a back studio
of CKNX but as the program grew it was
moved to the front studio, across from what
is now Vance's Pharmacy in Wingham.
That studio had a big picture window
looking onto the street and. Sarah has fdnd
memories of people lining the street to
Watch them perform.
Then the program started to travel
around to places like Hensall, Exeter,
Kincardine and Owen Sound where .the
Seyers Brothers appeared with them.
After she was married Sarah moved to
Brussels, but when her husband had to go
into the army she moved 'back home to

appeared on the Barn Dance program.
Then when Ken Rintoul who had a
country music program on CKNX was
transferred to a bank out of town. Sarah
took over his program as well. That
program was sponsored by Murray
Johnston Motors and Sarah always' sang a
hymn for the elderly, shut-in people, a
special song just for them. When her
husband came back from the war, she
discontinued singing with the barn dance
but kept the other program until the end of
the year. People who used to do the
announcing for this program included
Johnny Brent and Johnny Cruickshank.
"I really enjoyed being on the Barn
Dance. W.T. Cruickshank was certainly
very good to' me. Mr: Cruickshank wanted
people to get, ahead," Sarah said.
She was on the Barn Dance about 42
years ago and says that after she quit it
started to broaden out with different hands
coming in to play.
Before she became known as little Sarah,
she used to sing on a church service. At
that time the CKNX station was known as
10 B.P and Sarah remembers having to
stand up on a box so that she could reach
the microphone.
Now she is putting her singing power to
use in the local United Church choir: she
sometimes singsln a quartet and She is a
soloist 'Lodge.
Sarah still listens to CKNX radio and
now she has found another outlet for her
musical talents as well. She's taking piano'
lessons.

Congratulations to the Brussels Bombers,
the ladies slo-pitch ball team. While they did
not win the championship, being defeated by
Sebringville, that should not earn them
"boos'.' from their supporters. They did very
well indeed to get to the final game of the
series and provided ball fans with some very
entertaining games during the season, With
rmore encouragement and less criticism they
might have ,won the championships.
