SLIP, SLIDING. AWAYI—Brave souls who attended the Brussels fair
after a drenching rain on Wednesday morning found they h ad to tread
carefully at the fairgrounds or they could have found themselves face
down in the mud. The .weather also resulted in an attendance of about
,500, down from over 2,000 last year. (Photo by Langlois)

"If it's raining it must be
Brussels fair day."
That rather caustic remark
made by a local resident
proved only too true as the
pouring rain Wednesday
morning effectively cancelled
many of the fair events
including the parade and the
horse race.
Although attendance at
last year's fair had risen to
almost 2,000 people, this
year the figure plummeted to-
about 500 fairgoers.
Dignitaries came to the fair
but didn't speak since the
fair board decided not to get
an amplifying system after
the horse races were can-
celled.
The fact that the hydro was
off (after a tree tell on some
hydro wires) from about
10:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. also

for food preparation but

to come up with hot dogs and

get a cup of coffee due of the power failure.
The hydro which went off at about 10:30
a.m. was restored by about 3:45.

Brussels residents realized just how much
they depended on hydro when a freak wind
blew a tree limb onto some hydro wires
Wednesday morning, causing a power
disruption for approximately five and a half
hours.
The freak wind which lasted only a ,few
moments blew the water-laden limb off the
tree and it fell over onto the hydro line which
feeds the north end of the village. In
technical terms, it came down across the
4800 wire on Thomas, Street and up by the
old arena. As a result, three-quarters of the
town was without hydro.
When the limb fell, it knocked two wires of
the poles and the resulting sparks started
the tree on fire, but it was out in a few
ntinutes. The limb fell on the garage Of John
Simpson's house but no real damage
occurred.
The hydro loss "sparked"' many calls to
the municipal office and also had its effect oh
the Brussels fair since the ladies had to find
other methods than electric power to cook
the food:
Local stores had to ring their sides by

'The morning deluge of rain Wednesday of
