Planting tips
If you transplant hardy
chrysanthemums now, you
can still add color to your
• garden, even though most of
your flowers are fading.
"Chrysanthemums can be
transplanted into the flower
bed in full bloom," says Bob
Fleming, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food horti-
culturist. "They can with-
stand all types of weather for
example some late-maturing
varieties bloom cheerfully
until freeze-up."
Purchase chrysanthemums
from your garden centre
now. They're available in a
wide range of varieties and
colours. Choose from yellow,
bronze, pink, mauve, magen-
tas and creams.
"There are no rich reds, .
but softer tones can be
I found" says Mr. Fleming.
"Choose colors to accent
your house and garden."
Plant chrysanthemums in
well-drained soil in a sunny
location. Water thoroughly to
help the plant adjust and to
prevent drooping.
The top of the chrysan-
themum plants will be killed'
by heavy frost, but if you
shelter the plants from sever
cold during the winter,
, they'll, sprout new shoots
next spring.
