Jim and Verna Riley of R.R.2, Brussels
celebrated 50 years of marriage on August
30.
The couple was married at the Mitchell
Presbyterian manse on August 30, 1930 and
have lived in Mitchell, Dublin, on the
seventh concession of Morris. They have
lived on their present farm at R.R.2,
Brrissels for the past 36 years. Mrs. Riley is
the, former Verna. May. White and was born
in Stanley Township arid her husband was
born in McKillop Township.
The Rileys had five children, three of
whom are still living--Bev of Ingersoll,
Phyllis of R.R. 1, Centralia and Wayne at
home. They have 10 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
The reason their marriage has been
successful, Mrs. Riley says is, "We just get
along good. If everybody got along as good
as we did, there would be..no separations.
We worked together to get ahead,"
The Rileys have a mixed farming
operation and have worked hard all, their
lives. Mrs. Riley said she had no desire
whatever to go back to the old times.
An open house anniversary celebration
was held for the Rileys on Sunday, August r
31 with people coming from Stratford,
Ingersoll, Hensall, Ethel, Clifford,
Springfield, New Hamburg, Exeter and
Zurich. Gifts included a plaque from Ontario;
premier William Davis and letters of
congratulation from Opposition leader Joe
