One of the most' modern feed mills in
the province was officially opened Thursday,
north, of Wingham, by the United Coopera-
tives of Ontario,
Several hundred people enjoyed the
information meetings that were repeated all
day, tours of the new facility, and the pork
barbecue.
The new plant is the latest in new
technology and design and will be able to
buy local grain and offer 400;000 tonnes of
feed to farmers every year.
Some of the highlights of the new plant
include self cleaning elevator legs, and
conveyors, are the '1J-trough type that .
completely self clean. All chutes and bin
bottoms have a slop of 60 degrees, thus
avoiding material hangups. The mixer is a
drop bottom type which completely empties
after each batch.
It has a computerized -batching system
which permits weigh-out accuracies unheard
of with today's conventional weighing
syStems. It includes a Pellet mill equipped
with a quick change die that permits the mill
operator to change from one die size to
another in less than ten minutes; and with 69
bins the Mill is able to use all types of
grains, keeping them separately. This
enables the mill to formulate feeds using an
jexact analysis of the ingredients rather than
an average of several grades.
What once took 12 to 18 men to do the job
can-be handled by two or three.
At the opening ceremonies Orville Monk
acted as chairman and introduced Ron
McNeil, parliamentary assistant to the Hon.
Lorne Henderson, Minister of Agriculture
and Food.
Mr. McNeil pointed out the importance of
producers organizing and taking action
towards improving their -economic well
being.
"Equally important is the fact that the
region, in which this feed mill will operate,
contains top flight feed grain production and
in ever-expanding livestock and poultry
industry," he said.
Other speakers at the opening included
William Walden, mayor of Wingham, Brian
McBurney, reeve of Turnberry Township,
Robert Coulthard, president of United
Co-operatives of Ontario, and Julian Smith,
chief executive officer for UCO.
The computerized plant will have a twin
opening in Peterborough later in September.
UCO is owned by more than 46,000
individual members and 48 member Co-ops
representing another 35,000 members
across the province.
