Sitall8hnsey, CA much more scope for imaginative banking. , - If you want a new hobby that ia both rewarding and challenging, try money management -- the art of, putting your savings to, work • for you , in the most productive way. In a' :sense, we all prac- tise this hobby to some extent. Once it merely consisted of keeping enough money in your chequing account at, the bank to pay the bills, and keeping the surplus in a savings account where it would accumulate interest. • " • Dollar Sense offers general • financial advice by mem-1 hers of The Institute of- Chartered Accountants of Ontario. , But ° in the last year, several banks have intro- i duced new types of person- al accounts which provide Among these is the daily interest savings account. Unlike other non-chequing accounts, each dollar earns interest each day it is in the bank, as opposed to inter- est calculated periodically, based on minimum' bal- ance. So if your employer deposits your regularrpay in the bank in your name, it makes a lot of sense to have it placed in a daily interest account. The latest innovation is the daily interest chequing account. One of the inter- esting aspects .of these is that the banks give free chequing privileges if you maintain a $200 minimum balance. This is a good deal if you are a heavy cheque writer. Say you write 40 cheques a month; at 15 cents a 'cheque, you would; be, spending; $6 a month, or vz a year. The free chequing privilege means that you are actually earn- ing $72 a year on your $200 balance, or .36 per cent interest. Few . no-risk investments will provide that return. The "hobby" aspect of m a naging your sayings- can . be enhanced if you are willing to shop 'around at various trust companies and banks .for that extra little bit of interest. On .a $1,000 savings, account, however; an extra one- quirter of one per cent is actually earning only an extra $2.50 a year in' inter- est -- so consider whether it is worth the trouble of banking at an inconvenient location. • Locking ° savings into a guaranteed investment cer- Bluevale's first Funfest on this weekend tificate it. practice that requires some planning. It, might yield a slightly high- er interest rate, than a savings account, but it puts, Your money out of reach- That one per cent or, so extra interest you earn in a GIG may be a high price to „pay, since you won't have instant access to your cash. There are' other ways of making your hobby pay. For example, never pay, a charge account payment or utility bill late - but don't pay it early either. That money is going to earn interest for someone, so you might as well let it earn money for you just as long as you, can. Post WANT-ADS, Flione 887-6641 Already the community of Bluevale is starting fund-raising activities to raise money for the building of the new Bluevale hall and this weekend they will be having the first Bluevale Funfest.
