Brussels council had a long discussion
with building inspector Gerald Exel about
his duties and -the possibility of combining
three positions--building — inspector, dog
catcher and by-law enforcement officer into
Grey awards
Grey Township awarded a couple of drain
tenders when it met in regular council
session on Tuesday.
The tender of R.E.D. Bulldozing Services
•Ltd. of Blenheim was accepted for the sixth
'concession municipal drain at $22,791. Two
other firms also tendered for the job--Hanna
and Hamilton of Listowel-$24,648 and R.
Nicholson Construction of Sebringville at
$28,830. The same company was also
awarded the servicing for the, Michael
Municipal drain at $1,548.
Council also let three other tenders at
previout meetings—The Close drain was
awarded to Hanna and Hamilton at $16,708.
Other bids were Nicholson - $17,760 and
R.E.D. -.$22,762. The Bremner drain was
also awarded to Hanna and Hamilton at
$2,288. Nicholsons bid at $2,600 and R.E.D.
bid $2,922. Hanna and Hamilton was also
award the Krauter drain at $3,794. The
contract has not been let on the Cox drain
until verification of starting date.
Council passed a bylaw under the tile
drainage act in the amount of $13,700 and
approved building permits for Allan Martin--

Mr. Exel told council he was disappointed
that this year everybody else got a raise
except the building inspector. In Grey

Sinclair and Ethel Barlow.
Council was strongly opposed. to a
proposal by the Huron County Board of
Education of collecting education taxes

Some destruction 'resulted from
Tuesday's storm in Brussels including
damage to a section of the porch at the home
of Tom and Claire Hanrahan-Powers, when a
branch was blown down by the wind.
The roof was covered by insurance.
Brussels clerk Bill King said that one of
the johnny-balls located on a hydro pole near
the arena was strUckl brealcirig it into little

put out because of the storm. Gord

the transformers went out about 4 p.m. on
Tuesday and they couldn't find out anything

Brussels council talked to - local firemen
about the posiibilities of the firemen getting
physicals when they discussed Workmen's
Compensation for volunteer firemen at the
regillat meeting on Tuesday night.
After discussing increasing the compen-
sation for the firemen, council thought it
would be a good idea for each fireman to
have a physical and for medical reports to be
brought to council.
The firemen agreed with council's posi-
tion. Council later decided to increase the
total compensation for the department frbm
$10;000 to $13,000 per annum.-
Council passed a resolution to make
application for Ontario Home Renewal
Program (OHRP) funds in the amount of
$30,000.
A contract for excavation work on Thomas
and King Streets was awarded to McKercher
Contracting of RR 2, Bluevale in the amount
of $2,135. Other tenders were: Harvey
Machan Construction Ltd. of Monkton
$5,241.67; Lloyd JaCklin of RR 1, Listowel
$3180; Jim Adams of RR 2, Bluevale -
$2,997; and George RadfOrd Consttuction of
Blyth - $4,994.

In other busineis, council decided not to
repair a sidewalk requested by Mary McRae
now as the work was not in the 1980 budget
and also not to install a street light requested
by Doris McDonald on William Street for the
same reason.
The village will pay half the cost of the
group administration fee of the Huron
County Municipal Employees Insurance.
Brussels will pay $15.
Council also heard a report from • Reeve
Krauter on the construction of a sidewalk on
the fifth line. He said a grant had been
received on the curb but not on the whole
sidewalk.
"Our first informatiOn was no grant at all,
but now we'll get about $1500," the reeve
said.
Council agreed to enter into an agreement
with the county of Huron regarding the
construction of the curb portion of a sidewalk
from Elizabeth Street to Halliday Street.
A by-law giving Bell Canada permission to
construct new communication lines was
passed and building permits were approved.
