A .• • • ,• -• Deer hunt rules change this year — forms were mailed to all 1979 deer hunters.. They are also available at all licence issuers and the Wingham District Office. CONTROLLED HUNTER NUMBERS. SYSTEM: In southwestern and southcential Ontario it is the number of hunters which is controlled. This system limits the number of hunters who can hunt deer with a resident's licence in any designated zone. Both antlerless and antlered 'deer may be harvested in these zones without having to apply to Queen's Park for an antlerless permit. However, in zones managed by Controlled Hunter Numbers all hunters must , apply to the Wingham District Office , between September 2 and September 30, 1980 to enter a draw for a free validation stamp.. The. draw will be held October 6, 1980. Requests for applications are being accpeted now. . Bowhunters who wish to hunt antlerless deer in Ontario must submit an application for Queen's Park by August 20, 1980. Antlerless deer validation, stamps issued for a zone managed by Controlled Hunter Numbers will be valid for archery only in 'that zone. In addition all archers must purchase a $1.00 archery stamp to hunt deer, regardless of the zones they choose. Minimum requirements for archery equipment come into effect on September 1, 1980. - contact. Doug thiffet of this office through the Zenith line 92000. Norm R, Richards, District Manager Ministry of Natural RF.sources R.R.85• Wingham, Ontario , NOG 2W0 • t • , t An intensive investigation of deer management problems and potential solutions in Ontario-has led to a complete revision of deer hunting regulations for the 1980 season. Two systems have emerged to suit, the widely varying conditions in the province. One has been called the "Selected Harvest System" which allows all hunters in applicable areas, to hunt antlered deer but allows managers to regulate herd size by controlling the antlerless deer harvest. The other is called the "Controlled Hunter Numbers System" which allows a fixed number of hunters to hunt any deer in applicable management zones. SELECTIVE HARVEST SYSTEM: In this system hunters wishing to hunt antlerless deer must submit an Application to Hunt Antlerless Deer to Wildlife Branch, Queen's Park and postmarked no later than August 20, 1980. Only one application will be accepted for an antlerless permit, although the applicant will have a choice of two management zones in which to hunt. Zones In Huron County managed by the Controlled' Hunter System-(e.g. 89, 90, 91); should not be included as a choice. Only successful applicants will be notified, and , permits will be valid only for one of the zones chosen. Party hunting for antlerless deer will not be legal; only the hunter possessing a valid antlerless deer permit may kill and seal an antlerless deer. The pool came out ahead on capital cost. Above- ground pools start as low as $900 self-installed, in- ground pools with a vinyl liner range from $6,000 to $10,000 and custom, con- ' crete pools cost from $12,000 to $20,000. A two-bedroom .cottage with medium-size lot and lake frontage is consider- . ably more. In the popular regions such as Muskoka and Haliburton, such cot- ; tages range from $25,000 to. $50,000. A pool also costs less to , maintain than a cottage.. I spend $100 a year on water-balancing chemicals and another $150 every three or four years for a 1 new winter cover. If I wanted to heat the water, I would pay an additional $400 annually. My neigh- bor has to pay property taxes, utilities, heating and insurance, in addition to repairs and regular main- tenance. On top of all those on-going costs, he has to pay the ever increasing price of gasoline to get to his hideaway. • But not all the cards are stacked against the cot- ' tager. I had to concede that the cottage was clearly ahead as a year-round, fresh air recreation facility. i My neighbor can choose from any number of activit ies to occupy his time both summer and winter. In a good year, the pool season will run from mid- ' May, to mid-September. The cottage is also a better long-term invest.; rnent. It is a good hedge' I against inflation, as the) is better value? Farmers' licences in Controlled Hunter Management Zones now must have a free validation stamp, affixed and are valid only for the zone in which they live. Other landowners, or those who rent and reside, on at least 50 acres in a Controlled Hunter Zone will also be issued free validation • stamps upon application. In addition 1 member of the immediate family of a farmer or landowner will be issued a free validation stamp if they live on the same riroperty. Farmers and. landowners must apply by mail or in person to the Wingham District Office to hunt in Zone 89, 90 and 91 in Huron County. Huron County, has been divided into 3 zones in which a total of 625 validation stamps will be issued to resident deer hunters. There is no limit, however, to the number of stamps given to farmers and landowners.
