Moisture brings ,on white. bean mold
BY PAT LYNCH,
Sells & Crops Specialist,
0,M-A-F- Strafford
As I write this article most
of the white bean fields in
Perth i , id Huron have exces-
sive moisture. This, condition
is favourable for white mould
spread. If you intend to spray
some factors to consider are:
Spraying for mould is.
Prevention. If there is mould
on a plant you cannot stop
the disease on that plant, but
you may be able to prevent
the disease from spreading.
When you decide whether to • spray or not you are predict-
ing the weather. If you think
August will be wet you
spray, if you think August
will be dry, you don' 't spray.
WHERE WILL THE
DISEASE BE BAD?
1) Fields that will be most
prone to mould are fields that
had beans in 1979 and/or
1977. Both years we had wet
conditions and multiplication
of mould.
2) Any field, even the first
year bean that has lush
growth and is protected from
the wind - never has a chance
to dry out.
WHAT CHEMICAL DO YOU
USE?
Four products are regis-
tered for use for white mould

The Achievement Night
for the 4-H Club "Outdoor
Living" was held on July 22,
at the Gorrie. Conservation
Park. The Ethel 1 Club
consisted of 16 members, six
of these were boys. The
Leaders were Mrs. Barbara
Grube and Darlene Dobson.
During this Club the mem-
bers learned to cook out-of-
doors, press flowers and
make them into pictures,
place-mats, candles, and
book marks. Stewart Parker
taught the club members the

better than the other; how-
ever, due to the nature of this
disease, it will be hard to
show differences -between
products. He also hopes, to do
some timing trials.
,HOW TO APPLY?
-Both ground rigs and
airplanes are registered to
apply these chemicals. Again
research is ongoing to try
to determine which piece of
equipment is best. There are
some factors that are known.
-Aerial applications must
have 4 gallons of water.
-Planes must be no more
than 4 feet above the crop to
get proper coverage.
-With ground equipment
the higher the pressure and
more water the better. Ideal-
ly 100 gallons of water and
150 psi. This is completely
impractical, but the principle
of more H2O and more
pressure applies.
-Ground equipment can
spread anthracnose and bac-
