It was a difficult decision but after serious
deliberation Linda Machan was selected
Queen of the Brussels Fair on' Saturday
night, the first time, the fair has named a
queen.
Linda, 20, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Douglas Machan of R.R., 5,. Brussels.
The new queen, who was sponsored by
Brussels Stockyards, was chosen over seven•
other contestants. She was crowned by MP
Murray Cardiff. ,• •
Linda currently, works at the. Chiropractic
Centre in Wingham and• hopes to get, her
Grade 13 through a correspondence 'course.
She studied behavioral science at Fanshawe
,College for one year.
Runner-up was Katherine ” Cardiff who,
along with Linda, was presented with a
variety, of gifts from local merchants.
A congeniality award was presented by
,Jack Cardiff to Paln Hackwell. Pam was
chosen by the other contestants.
Judging began early in the evening with
each girl being individually • interviewed;
Following dinner the, girls made a short
speech on "My 'Future in the' Eighties."
Judges for the event were McDaniel
Phillips, of station CKNX in. Wingham, Jean
Ross of Sarnia and Arlene Van Den Akker of
Seaforth. Bob Cunningham of Ethel was
master of cermonies and he introduced each
girl before her speech.

russets canoeists in national race

"It's in your blood," says Randy"
Boogemans of Hensall. "After a little while
at it, it,gets in your blood."
No, he's not talking about some rare or
exotic disease. He's referring to marathon
canoe racing, a sport he has been involved

with 16 teams competing for a top prize of
$300. The action gets underway on Friday
night and continues through to Monday.
The tournament is, sponsored by. the
Brussels Recreation. Committee.'
A $3.00 weekend pass allows spectators to
see a possible 22 games and' also makes the
holder eligible to win a draw for $25. The
draw will be made prior to the championship
game. Daily tickets at $1.50 can also be
purchased. Children under. 14 are admitted
free.
Last year's winners were the Wingham
BP's, who defeated Sebringville 1-0 in 15
innings in the final game.
The' event is at the Brussels Ball Park.

, Randy is a member of one of the five
Huron County racing teams headed for the
first Canadian Marathon Canoe Racing
Association National meet in Ottawa this
weekend. He, and partner Kathy Arm-
strong of. London, will be competing along
• with Murray Connelly of Kippen and Mary
Ellen Knight of London in the Senior
among those representing Ontario, and
will compete against 'racers 18 years old
and younger from across the country.
Although only amateurs, these racers
take their sport very seriously, and are
involved in events throughout the province,
almost every weekend during the spring
and summer. The Gibbings-Kloss team has
won every Junior race entered, while the
Boogemans-Armstrong team has yet to"
lose in Mixed class competition this
season.
Teams racing in the Nationals had to
qualify either by winning a qualifying race
for their region, or by total points
accumulated over three such races. All of
Karen Cowan or Brussels•will be teamed ,
the local teams qualified by points except
for the Gibbings-Kloss duo.
The six. Junior canoeists, along with
Terry and. Calvin 'Salter of Brucefield, will,
also be travelling to Peterborough for the
Ontario Summer Games August 22-25.
Thye will be among 2,500 athletes compet-
inigl in 21 events, with about 250 involved in
the canoeing races.

Monday, August 4th is Civic Holiday
and Brussels citizens have been tequested
by Council to observe it as such.

All of the anticipation, suspense and
excitement of the Queen of the Brussels Fair
competition' is over. Congratulations to
Linda Machan who won the "Queen of ,the
Fair" title. With eight lovely, intelligent,
young ladies of the community competing,

the judges must have had a difficult task
coming to a decision. The dinner and dance
attracted a large gathering to enjOy the
evening and be present when the "Queen of
the Fair" was acdaimed and presented with
her gifts.

With all the activities going on here this
summer the youngsters have not had much
time as yet to get bored in vacation time. The
recreation park is &busy place mornings and
afternoons. From 35 to 50 (occasionally
'more) children take the opportunity to
participate in the program under the capable
'direction of Cathy Sholdice and Brenda

popular 'sport, Mr.' Boogemans at first
says, "for the competition", but then adds
that it is relatively inexpensive, and
provides the opportunity to see a lot of the
country, and to meet many interesting and
friendly people. A canoeist's main expense,
after the initial cost of a good racing canoe
and accessories, is the gasoline necessary
to drive to the races each weekend. Trips
across the province, and even into Quebec
up with Dana Kloss of Brueefield in the marathon canoe *racing instead of a more or Micftigan, are 'common.
