Despite, occassional
interruptions due to
inclement weather the
Belgrave Community Centre
Board sponsored its first
Annual Family Picnic, on
Sunday, July 20th. The over
300 people who turned out
for the fun were treated to an
exhibition ball game between
the Belgrave and Bluevale
Squirt boys teams.
Belgrave won the game
but the. Bluevale boys were
,good sports to help us start
the fun.
Intermission saw a tug of
war between the hard men of
East Wawanosh and the
brawn& Morris. After a split
decision, Morris was
proclaimed the winner in the
third event (some will say
there were extra helping
hands on the Morris rope,
but who's counting!) The
crowd really appreciated the
men's efforts and hope the
blisters soon disappear.
The main attraction of the
afternoon was the Old
Timers ballgame featuring
long standing rivals teams,
Belgrave verus the Stone
School The 3elgrave team
was Cordon Welwood,
Kenneth Coultes, Keith
Pletch, George Johnston,
Jim Taylor, Harry Brydges,
Ross Anderson, Jack Shiell,
Bill Nethery, Murray
Vincent, Bryan Coultes and
Murray Shiell.
The Stone School team was
made up by Mait Edgar, Jack
Higgins, Arnold Mathers,
Wilfred Haines, Bill Coultes,
George Procter, Bill Elston,
Alan Scott, Ross Higgins,
Ross Procter and Glenn
Coultes. Some of the fellows
could even still fit in their old
uniforms!
The game ended in an
honest tie 10-10 so the teams
may meet again someday on
the playing field. The day
ended with a delicious' park
barbecue cooked by the
Belgrave Kinsmen. Special
thanks to these fellows who
donated their time and did a
really good job. Combining
all this with horse shoes, lots
and lots of lemonade and
cookies and you have the
picnic atmosphere at the
arena on Sunday.
Proceeds from the day go
toward the up keep of the
arena and with this years
success plans could begin
for the second Family Picnic.
