Remember Morris
Remember the old swing-
ing bridge' that used to hang
over the Maitland River near
the fourth concession of Mor-
ris Township?
- There are probably a few
people in the Brussels area
who retain fond memories of
holding picnics on the river-
banks or crossing over the
bridge which was construc-
ted by the late Ward Sellers.
A story on this bridge was
done in a June, 1949 issue of .
Farmer's Magazine and was
contributed to. the Post by,
Toni Garniss of Brussels.
The story indicated that
the floor of the 225 foot
suspension bridge was sim-
ply a 150 rod length of
9-gauge woven wire fencing;
walls and siderails of the
bridge were formed by two
more similar 15-rod lengths,
fastened to the floor with
short' twists of wire. Odd
pieces of salvage luMber laid
on the fencing wire made a
footing for the bridge travel-
ler.
The bridge was suspended
from two stout cedar posts on
each bank and the main posts
were braced with short
lengths'Of three-quarter inch
steel rope, which were
secured at each end of the •
bridge to a post buried in the
ground and weighted down
with boulders and earth. As •
many as 20 people had been
on the bridge at one time.
Since the normal approach
to the farm buildings on the
Sellers place Was by a lane
